I have a 2005 Mountain Aire 43' with a Allison six speed. Why does the gear selection light not move down when the tranny shifts down? The light still says it is in 6th gear, even climbing in the mountains or comming up to a stop sighn with the engine brake on, you can feel it shifting down, but the numbers on the panel do not come down.

jayhawk1, I am going to take a shot at this. What I expect that you are looking at is the gear that you selected and not the gear you are in.

Try manually downshifting and see if the number changes.

You have only one indicator and it shows the gear you selected and not the gear the transmission is actually in. When you press "D" (Drive) it automatically selects a target gear of "6" and that is what you see. If you press the down arrow you have selected "5" and it will show in the window.

It is the same in most cars. You put the transmission in "D" and "D" will light on the dash, but it will not show you going through the gears to get to "D".

If you was to see both the selected gear and the actual gear you can get a Silverleaf VMSpc and connect it to a laptop.

Driver is right. If your display only has one digit, then it is showing the maximum gear that you can use. If the display has two digits, then the one on the left is the maximum gear and the one on the right is the actual gear. I checked with Allison, and you cannot switch the single digit display to the dual display.

That sounds reasonable. I am sure that is what is happening. Thanks to all.

When my Cummins 400 goes into exhaust brake mode, RPM goes up and the single gear light goes to 2 automatically. So this seems built in the 6 speed Allison transmission. Otherwise, the only time I will see 5 or 4 is if I manually downshift.

Just remember when you downshift with the buttons it won't go above that selected gear until you plug it back up to 6

That is exactly what mine is doing. It would seem more logical if the indicator light was matching up with the gear you are actually in.
