alternator exciter circuit

2001 Newmar Mountainaire.

Does the exciter power for the alternator come from the start (cranking position) or another circuit/resistor ?

It's a long way from the dash to the alternator is there a fuse in the line to the alternator?

The exciter voltage typically comes via a separate key-switched circuit. It's a small gauge wire going to the alternator. If no 12v at the alternator excitation, no charging at all occurs. There is usually a fuse - which is not uncommonly blown.

Thank you Sir,
now to find the fuse location in my unit.

Had to remove the alt. since all the wires had no slack and with location of alternator there was no real access to test at alternator.

Today I'll have the alt checked. Thanks again

There are basically two types of alternator..

Self Exciting (These have only one wire going to them)

And the other is powered off the ignition side of the switch, (Same as the fuel pump and other engine stuff). May have it's own fuse.. if it has a fuse.

While you have the alternator off for exam.. Have it tested. and if needed rebuilt.

Had the alternator checked .... bad rotor... completely dead. Two day turnaround about $200 complete rebuild, NY tax $16 .

Pretty good service and plenty of info available (ConRel, Rotterdam NY).

Exciter circuit for my alternator (Leece Neville ) comes from the starter circuit and is only on when starter is turning. Once engine starts alt is producing. Could come from the starter solenoid.

I still need to trace for fuse, just in case.
