Since Bob mentioned my installation, I might as well blab a little about it. When drilling the hole in my roof I just took a guess that there would be no wiring in the way but I always begin with a very small diameter hole. Chances of damaging something in the roof is minimized with an exploratory hole. When all looks clear with the small hole, time for the proper sized version. Still not 100% guaranteed of not hitting wiring, but you have minimized the risk.

Concerning the amplifier...

I orginally started with just the external antenna and it did help reception. If I had one antenna bar without the external antenna, I would go to two or three bars with. The problem I found was that even if you could hear the other party, they would not necessarily hear you very well or not at all. With the external antenna and amplifier all is well. You can hear them and they will for a fact hear you. (The Wilson amp also has a receiver amplifier.)

I also think that by using the amplifier, your cell phone is putting out minimum transmit power to drive the amp and therefore saving your batteries (if that is important.) BTW, cell phone transmit power is regulated by a 'handshake process' with the cell facility to prevent adjacent cell interference.
