Wrapping with black electrical tape is the easiest fix. You can split a rubber hose and slide it over the place that is rubbing away.

I don't know how much room you have to work with but can you disconnect one end of the cable and put a heat shrink sleeve over the bare spots? As an alternative you might be able to use liquid tape.

I've read here that adding a little mineral oil to the batteries cuts down on the corrosion. Do a search of the site for "Mineral Oil in batteries" for how it's done..

It's not normal for batteries to boil especially with current converters/chargers that float charge at a certain voltage.
Is it possible you have one or more bad batteries? Can you check specific gravity of the cells?
Split flex wire loom will protect you cables at rub points.

.If those are your original batteries, they will keep gassing more and more as they age. Actually, they are probably pretty close to their life limit. You have to disconnect from shore power, shut off and disconnect the inverter, and then you can pull everything out of the battery compartment, clean it up, and reinstall everything. Take pictures and make drawings of the wiring. New AGM batteries will solve the corrosion problem although they are quite expensive. They will keep you from having to replace the battery tray and related hardware in the future if you don't already have to.

AGM's being "worth it" is relative. You will NEVER have any acid leak issues or cleanup involved. You will never have to check the water. They will hold a charge for a very long time. They were worth it to me to never give my batteries a thought again.

Our U-2200's are over 9 years old now and still working quite well. I did put a desulphation liquid in them in 2005, then 4 oz of mineral oil in each cell. The battery compartment and cables have less corrosion than we did after 2 years in our 2000 DSDP that I didn't do anything to. I've never run a desulphation charge on them in the 9 years either.
