We have a 1999 DSDP 3884
I went to start my RV and zero
The house battery’s were good and the chassis battery were dead
The generator would not start

We then charged the chases batteries then everything was fine

some questions
does the generator start off the chassis battery’s ?
does the generator charge the house and chassis battery’s ?
when the shoreline is plugged in does that charge both the house and chassis batteries?

does the generator start off the chassis battery’s ?
It shouldn't. You could have pressed the Aux. button to connect all the battries and it might have started. My Gen started off the house batteries. The relay on the dash to start the gen needs 12V to work so by pressing the Aux. button you would have given it enough juice to work.

does the generator charge the house and chassis battery’s ?
Mine only charged the house batteries.

when the shoreline is plugged in does that charge both the house and chassis batteries?
Mine didn't but yours might. The best thing to do is turn off your chassis battery switch when you park or store it. I always kept a small battery charger to charge my chassis battery before I left or to put on if I was going to use the radio or docking lights.

Here is a thread that may help you.
If you have the BIRD System and coach is plugged in batteries will be charged and alternator will charge them when traveling.
Welcome to the forum.

Hi dutch99,
Your not going to like this answer, but it all depends. Newmar has changed over the years as to which batteries start the generator. An easy way to tell how your coach works is to press the store button, putting the coach in sleep mode. Try to start the generator. Next, turn off the generator and turn the chassis kill switch to the store mode. Return the coach batteries to the "USE" setting. Try to start the generator. This question will now be answered.

The generator and shore power should charge both coach and chassis batteries. This assumes your coach has a BIRD. I'm pretty sure it does.

One other thing is make sure the LP detector is disconnected feeds off chassis battery.
Most newer coach's Gen is fed off the house batteries older ones you can take your pick.

The answer to all your questions depends on the motor home. and what's worse, the SPECIFIC motor home, two different motor homes of the same make and model may be different.

My rig, the generator starts off the house... However I can choose to start it with the chassis.

On MY rig both generator and shore power charge all batteries

Some rigs the generator starts off the chassis battery and in a very very few of them it has a dedicated battery which is for its use only.. Nothing else.

Some rigs shore power, and thus the generator, (Or to be more precise the converer) ONLY charge the house batteries.
