Ok, I've read the manual and still don't know this.
When plugged into shore power does the comverter charge the coach batteries AND the chassis batteries?
Or just the coach batteries?
If not the chassis batts can I put a battery tender on them ?

Thanks
Don

The converter charges the coach batteries. But, yes, you can install a device such as Battery Tender to handle the chassis batteries.

26 guitars? I'll bet you don't play them all at the same time though.

Don, must Newmars have a solar panel to charge chassis batteries. Check your dash and you may see a red led button with the wording around it "solar charging when lit" when you see the red led lit during sunlite your chassis batts will be charged. Had on 3 NEWMARS never had a dead chassis batt. Your altenator will charge both house an chassis batteries when coach is on the move. Your GEN and converter will only charge your house batts. "007"

Yes the coach batteries are charged thruogh diodes from the charger. The diodes prevent any power flowing the other way. Additionally they are also charged by the trickle solar panel on the roof. At least this is the way this and my last Newmar did and I suspect yours is no different. It is not spelled out in any manuals. To test this as I did, turn on the headlights for 10 minutes with shore power disconnected. Attach a multi-meter to the chassis batteries. Turn off the headlights and monitor the chassis battery voltage. Now while monitoring the voltage, have someone plug in the shore power. You will see the voltage rise. Your chassis is being serviced by the charger.

My 2001 DSDP came with two chargers. One for house and one for chassis.

Most convertor/chargers only charge house batteries when you have 110 volt ac . Could be something different now, but I am not aware of anything.

As 007 mentioned ,Newmar puts a small solar panel on most coaches for engine battreies, but if you don't have a lot of sun it isn't enough.

I'm currently looking for info re; putting a larger panel on if it can be done with current wiring.

Hope this info helps. Thanks==== AJBJRVERS

AJ, the wiring for the larger solar panel is the same gage as existing wiring on present panel, if red led is just an indicator to show panels working, you should be OK. Just have to wire in regulator that comes with solar panel. Saw one at Campers Inn for $150. "007"

Recapping my earlier post. I've had two Newmars, a '99 Mountain Aire gas and my current '02 DSDP. Both charged the chassis batteries through the charger via diodes. There was nothing showing it did in the manual or wiring diagram. In both cases I tested it using a multi-meter and in both cases it charged the chassis also.

AJ, I wonder what Lug Nut is saying maybe the cause of all your batteries discharge problems in the past. "007"
