Battery charging

A thread on one of the other forums got me to wondering. Can I assume that my 2005 Kountry Star charges the house batteries while the engine is running? Also, could I assume the chassis battery is being charged as well as the house batteries when plugged into shore power, or running the generator? I believe it has a BIRD system. Thanks.

Both our Dutch Star DP's (2000 and 2002) did.

Your assumptions are correct. This link in QT's # 3 will explain, your year coach would have a Bird System.
Here is one on wiring and fusing.
All the links below in my signature will have info for your Newmar plus all the stickies top of this forum.

Hi harleyjt,
I also have an 05 KS. Per the previous posts, all batteries are charged when on shore, engine or generator power. The BIRD will decide who gets charged first, when and how much.

FWIW You can assume anything. It might pay you to check with a voltmeter. If you check the battery voltage when unplugged, not running, and having run that way for an hour or more then measure the voltage again when you have started it, plugged it in, and unplugged but started the genset. Write all those numbers down on a 3x5 card or similar and put them where you store your meter. That way you check the operation now and have a reference if there is a perceived problem. All the voltages will go up when charging compared to at rest. ;-)

Hi nothermark,
What you mention may not work on a Newmar coach. The BIRD (for an 05) or BIM (more recent coaches) decides what to charge, when and for how long. At rest or having power from the engine or generator, may not show a difference in DC volts. This does not mean anything is wrong.

Thanks for the replies. That is how I thought it worked.

I do have to figure out if I have a problem with one of the relays. A month or so ago, I went to start the coach and the chassis battery was dead. I flipped the boost switch and initially nothing happened. Everything still dead. I cycled the switch several times, and finally, I had power to start the engine. Later, in looking around under the hood and checking connections and so forth, I found one of the relays was hot to the touch. It appears to be a smaller relay located adjacent to what I think is the main BIRD relay that has labeling on it. I'm suspecting the hot relay may be the boost relay and its sticking. Does that sound reasonable?

In the links provided it shows how relay should work internally instead of trying to fix I would just order a new one and replace it this link will direct you to many of the control items in your coach. Click on pictures in link will tell how to order.
This link is also useful just change the search link in block.
All these links will be found through the links below in my signature to answer many Tech questions you may have.

FWIW The meter readings will tell you if it is charging. The BIRD may be the reason one side is not. One side will be charging depending on whether on shore power or engine power. All the BIRD controls is sharing the charging source to the other battery. It can stop sharing if under certain conditions one needs to understand to decide if there us a problem or not.

The Bird system will be charging the house batteries first and when they are full charge will charge your chassis batteries, when on shore power or Gen.
While driving Bird charges the chassis batteries than the house batteries off the alternator.
