Installed 600 watt inverter after breaker in john. forgot to turn off breaker, destroyed inverter. Got new one but now, when hooked up to AC, or probably generator, House and engine batteries both discharge instead of Charging.I only guess that the inverter blew something. appreciate any help.

I've read your post three times and I'm still confused... An inverter takes 12 vdc and converts it up to 120 vac; -basically it uses battery power to run 120v appliances. Did you hook up your inverter to power a 120v electrical circuit, say for TV/DVD? Hopefully you didn't wire it back to your generator...

I wired after the breaker to TV ,so that I could turn breaker off so that inverter would not be blown by gen, but forgot to flip breaker. this blew inverter(dumb I know). Generator seems to run AC current OK, but runs batteries down.

Hi arknphyl,
Welcome to iRV2. If I read your posts correctly, there are two power sources to the TV. Shore/generator and the inverter. The inverter power source is the coach battery(s). Before I make any further posts, it is important to know if this is correct?

Wiring an inverter, especially an add-on to an existing electrical system, can be confusing. It sounds to me like you have the inverter's AC output connected to a circuit that also is powered from your generator (and maybe even shore power). This is a big no no. See this diagram - Xantrex Diagram

Any outlets that you want to power with the inverter and generator/shore power must be wired directly to the inverter's AC output and not directly to any other power source. The inverter will sense when generator or shore power is provided to its input and will switch off the battery feed automatically. If you're having to flip a breaker to avoid damage to your inverter, then you need to rewire.

Welcome arknphyl to the Newmar forum and irv2.
As everyone has said your inverter works off batteries to convert 12v to ac. The inverter may have a cord to plug into a 110v outlet for a charger builtin the converter to charge the batteries. The battery leads red+ & black- are hooked up to your house batteries. The GFI outlet will supply the 110v to device you want to operate if you reverse this process you will have a problem.
Let us know how your making out enjoy the forums.
