Battery isolation manager

Yesterday I finally figured out why my coach would not charge the chassis batteries when plugged into shore power. This has been a problem since the coach was new and did not bother me since we moved about enough for the engine alternator to charge the batteries. I was advised to replace the BIM and started to do so. When I unhooked all the wires , I found that the chassis lead and the house leads were reversed. Such a simple mistake by Newmar has driven me crazy over the last year and a half. Has any one else had this problem? My coach has been trouble free other than this.

Now that's interesting TOM we have for pass week been discussing your battery problem on this other thread, we will just have to add your find to it.
In fact I have a couple of threads to add it too.
So now you have a spare B.I.M. are the cables that are reversed marked as to where they go or did you trace them out?

I will be notifying Newmar of your find we have had many members with no chassis battery charging, maybe a TSB will be issued.

Thanks for spreading the word. I sent the new BIM back to Newmar yesterday. I did not mark the leads on the cables. The rest of the story is, I had to mount the BIM upside down! The cables come through the box side by side and are sealed off with some sort of very tough sealant which I could not even budge. There was not enough slack to cross them over.
Thanks for all you do on the forum to help us all!

When you say you did not mark the cables to identify them, did you have them disconnected for some reason, before pulling BIM out or were they the cables installed in reverse by the factory????

They were reversed at the factory. The cables were sealed around the bulk head penatration with a very tough sealant.

Hmm .... wouldn't the BIM work anyway? .... maybe just not in the same order of which bank charged first. I guess we'd need a pic of the original wiring.

Good Work.
Nothing like getting down and dirty. All the armchair internet techs are great but nobody would even dream of your scenario.

Did you happen to let Mr. Newmar know? I'm sure he would be interested as I'm also sure yours is not alone.

The problem was his chassis battery would not charge off the Alternator or converter with cables reversed.
It screwed up the BIRD or B.I,M, as to what it was suppose to do.
I guess the house batteries were charging he didn't say.
I will be notifying Newmar of this problem maybe they will issue a TSB.
Many have had this chassis battery problem especially the gas coach's.

I can only assume the Coach sense wire is on the Chassis Bank. Easy to swap on a BIRD but harder on a BIM with it's strap instead of a wire.

My B. I. M. went belly up in previous coach (Cornerstone). Of course the mobile guy and CS said I just needed new chassis batteries. They were wrong and I paid the bill for their mistake.New batteries promptly went dead.

Where is this mounted at and how would I tell if the wiring was reversed?

The BIM works by monitoring the voltage of the coach, house voltage. At 13.2 volts the BIM will pull in the solenoid and charge both sets of batteries. Since the chassis was reversed on the BIM the monitoring was looking for 13.2 on the chassis bank which never got to 13.2 volts because there was no direct connection to the charger which was charging only the coach side. When the coach was running its motor, the chassis batteries were getting it charge from the alternator.
