Very nice. I am now inspired to do the same on my 02 MADP.
Since I do not know the condition of my bearings thought I would try to track down a bearing part number just in case I need to replace any.
In the pictures it looks like it might be a double row bearing. Kilian makes a bearing 1-1/2" OD x 1/2" ID by 3/4" thick. It also is not sealed or shielded.

Could this be the bearing that is present in the slides?

Thanks,

Thanks,
Spk64..... the OEM bearings (rollers) are double row open ball bearings. The inner race miced at a few hundredths thicker than the outer so they were made to mount firmly and still have turn clearance. They had no markings on them whatsoever, so were impossible to trace AT THE TIME!!!

My tray had no remaining sticker or marking to identify the source. However, literally just this morning I was chatting with a guy at the CG I'm at, who told me these battery trays are mostly all made by a company called Journeyman, and are sold to numerous RV builders by Keyline Sales of Elkhart, IN. So there you go! I have done nothing to verify this info, I'll leave that to you, but they may be a source for the bearings.

Good Luck!

Very nice write up and great detail. I still pack all my bearings the same way. People keep talking about mineral oil where would I find this? I've asked different auto parts stores and the deer in headlights look is always entertaining. Thanks Robert

Battery Tray: Not a Mod, Just a Cleanup

Thanks for the kind words!

Freestyle, check at a CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, etc., in the health & pharmacy section.

JFXG - I looked up Keyline Sales and you are correct. I'm not sure if they sell to the public, but they do carry a line called Journeyman that are battery slide trays. It seems that they also sell other sliding trays and even art work.

First let me join the choirs of thanks! Great write-up! This thread being 6 years old I am wondering how the restore is holding up? Old or new this is an important area for concern and cleaning in most every coach. Any advice you'd update?

Thanks. Glenn

Jellybean, I did a similar rebuild on my old Dutch Star many years ago. I also put the rubber mat underneath the batteries once the battery tray was complete. My recollection is that using the rubber mat cause moisture to be retained under the batteries and this seemed to hasten new rust. Good luck!

Great Job-- I went thru the same exercise 2 years ago when I decided to replace my flooded batteries with AGM's. Cleaned up the whole compartment and tray/mechanism
and after treating with ospho, put on a couple coats of POR 15. My compartment had a large opening toward the front tire which allowed dirt and debris into the area so I closed that off. That, combined with the AGM's has me with a very clean battery compartment 2 years later.

Great job, Nice write up.

It is amazing how much damage flooded lead acid batteries do.

Very soon after I go my new coach home I was already starting to get corrosion.

So I removed and sold off all the Interstates, and replaced them with Lifeline AGMs and could not be more satisfied that I will never have to go through what this thread is all about.

Before and after shots.

I changed out the helmet straps for ratchet straps also much more secure.
