Bay Star/Single Air Conditioner

Good Morning Everyone,

My wife and I are considering some options in order to get out from under our current motorhome. We looked at the Bay Star 3124 and the Bay Star Sport 2903 on a local dealers lot. The price difference is around $25000.00 (with the Sport being less expensive). We are aware of the differences between the two such as larger wheels and tires, extra 2' in length, 50 amp service and heavier chassis on the 3124. The 3124 also has two A/C's. My main concern with the Bay Star Sport we saw is the single 15.0m Heat Pump/Air Conditioner. We live in Florida and are concerned that the single A/C will be insufficient to cool down 30' worth of motorhome. The dealer of course says that the single large A/C will be just fine. What do you think? Anyone in Florida with a Bay Star Sport? Thanks for your input.

Go with the two air conditioners if you're concerned. You'll regret not getting them way more than you'll regret spending the money when it's hot.

We live in Florida and just traded our Phoenix Cruiser, with one air conditioner, for a Baystar Sport 3013 with one air conditioner. Our Phoenix was 31' and the Baystar is 30'11"--basically the same length.

We go to Maine in the summer so the use of the air would be minimal. We have had instances here in Florida, when we have traveled to the Keys etc. in November, that it got pretty warm but we adapted. It will never be as cool in a motorhome as the house.

We have not taken delivery of the Baystar Sport yet. Supposed to be the first of May. I really think that one air conditioning unit will be fine for the way that we use the motorhome.

Thanks for the replies....We primarily use the motorhome in Florida but head up north and west for 3-4 week trips in the summer. Last summer it was amazingly hot in June on our trip out to Mt. Rushmore but the two A/C's on our Vacationer kept up. Now the chassis air was another story.....and one of the reasons for letting her go.

Get the one with 2 A/C units! With a single unit, you will find the bedroom unbearably stuffy and hot. There is no real airflow back there in that little box.

The reason the dealer is giving you so many assurances is he is trying to unload that single A/C coach.

Also, having 2 units lets you use either or both. We run the bedroom one at night for sleeping and turn the front one way down/up depending on temperatures. During the day we reverse it.

If you search the forum, you will find there have been many posts on this subject and the BS owners with only one unit regret it. Those with two units never do. Plus you wil have better resale going forward.

Another advantage of having two a/c's over just one is if you are on a trip and one of the a/c's suddenly decides to stop working then you will at least still have the other one to keep the coach somewhat cool (using a portable fan to push the air to where it's needed) until you can get the non-working a/c fixed.

We have only one unit in our coach. We have been in hot 100 plus temps at
our Carolina home, and 90 plus temps at our Key largo home with high humidity.
The single unit works just fine. You will not be hanging meat, but keeping temps
in the low seventy's aren't a problem.

If you hate Summer hear and humidity you will be much happier with 2 air conditioners. It also depends on how you use your RV and AC. When camped in a park with out utilities and you return to the RV from an active and hot day you will think you were so smart to get 2 ACs for quick cool down with less generator run time.

Two (2) AC units for anyplace with high temps and high humidity. Plus the 50 amp is especially sweet as compared to 30 amp service with only two (2) 15 amp legs.

We have 2 ACs and last year the one in the bedroom went out in 95 degrees and 80% humidity. It got real stuffy back in the bedroom. The front unit just couldn't couldn't keep up. Now it was a 13,500 btu not the 15,000, but I truly don't think that would have made the difference. Now with both ACs in operation, the coach stays cool. I have also used the HPs down to 38 degrees and never had to use the furnace.

Thanks to everyone for responding to this. I think we will eventually go with the Bay Star even though it is more expensive. Let's see what the dealer can really do when motivated.

My guess is that you will get that price difference down to way under 25,000, as I think you may be basing that on MSRP differences. Do the math and figure a 25% discount off each MSRP as a ballpark to see what the difference will really be. Either way you will be much happier with the 3124. It has a great floorplan as well as all the differences you mention, bigger tires, more NCC, bigger generator, two AC's as well as two Heat pumps, 50 amp service, 2 extra feet, and a better overall ride and handling. Whatever the price difference is you get what you pay for and if you buy smaller than you want that will last until you trade it in for a bigger one with better amenities, that is not cost effective either. I would definitely go with two AC's/Heat Pumps anyway for a lot of the reasons mentioned. When it is hot we can cool down with the two AC's and then only run the front one at night so we don't hear anything in the bedroom. Same thing with the heat pumps. Other than to check the furnace to make sure it works, and to maintain it, we never have had to use the furnace. Good luck on your decision.

We have the 15,000's, dual AC's in our 32-footer. Anything over 95 degrees, and the front AC just can't keep up. Sometimes we're in CG's with 30 amps and no generator allowed, and it's uncomfortable when the temp gets high.

This summer we were in Zion in a 30A site, at 115 degrees, and we couldn't get the inside temp under 75 until about 3am. I also learned we should have gone with the extra insulation. Live and learn.
