Bay Star Wonít Start

Just arrived back from Florida after driving for two days. Came over to the storage lot this morning to clean everything out and the engine wonít start. The chassis battery reads itís 13.1 V, but it wonít even attempt to crank over. I found a ground screw head broken in the engine apartment and cleaned up where it was mounted and reattached but still wonít attempt to start. Tried battery boost and nothing. What am I missing?

Did you try using the house batteries to start the coach? Should be a switch on the dash that allows you to use the house batteries instead of chassis battery.

I did try that; pushed and held for a couple of minutes and nothing. I changed the booster fuse in case it blew and that didnít help either. Generator ran for couple of hours this morning as well. Thatís what makes it confusing for me.

Bay Star Wonít Start

Ok follow up. Came back to wait for towing company to try jumping it or towing it in. For grins and giggles tried starting it again but nothing (and I do mean not even a click). Cranked again and started right up like nothing was ever wrong . Is this a bad ground still? Something completely else?

Could be any number if things. Bad ground is a great guess. Did you look at the connections at the starter motor? Although your BS is new, you might look at the ignition switch connections. Intermittent things drive me nuts!

So I believe this little ground screw was my source of consternation today. I probably need to clean up the ensure it is making solid contact, but hopefully I donít have to chase down further gremlins.

Make sure the battery terminals are tight, on the batteries.

Hi Bill - If everything else is as it should be I would suspect that the starter solenoid is defective. Not out of the realm of reality that it would do this on a new coach. Sometimes a bit of garbage when new keeps the solenoid from operating. I had one that did it 3 or 4 times on a new coach so that I had to jump the solenoid. Never replaced it as it ran fine for the next 5 years that we owned the coach. If that is the issue Ford will cover it for you.

Tom

Were you traveling on any salty roads, if you were the starter may have frozen up with salts have to remove mine when tried to start in spring after a trip to FL. in February.
Removed it and cleaned up the solenoid and starter contacts and was as good as new, salts on road will cause problems with items under coach, compartment door locks, starter, jacks, ground battery connections and you name it bad news.
