Bed question for Newmar Owners
Hello Newmar owners!
We currently have a 2011 Winnebago Tour and for the most part really like it. We've had a number of issues (had to replace to ACs, slide issue, inverter issue, battery issues, etc, etc.) but one of the biggest issues has been the way that Winnebago integrated the bed.
I won't go into too many details but one of the biggest headaches of the entire thing is that in order to get the rear slides in, the head of the bed has to be raised up (so that the head of the bed is around a 45 degree angle) in order to have enough room for the slides to fully retract.
This is a pain for a lot of reasons but the main one is you can't actually sleep in the bed if the slides are in. Even worse, if the bed isn't 100% of the way articulated up the slide won't operate which causes a lot of pushing and/or cursing when ready to be on our way
We are now potentially looking for a bigger coach and of course Ventana/Dutch Stars, etc are at the top of the list.
I was curious, in a Newmar (specifically the Ventana or Dutch Star in 4018 or 4037) can the slides all be in and the bed be flat, or does the bed have to be articulated upward for the slides to close?
Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thank you all so much for your time!

No articulation needed.

Our sleep number bed lays flat when the slide comes in.

The bed stays flat in our 4018DS but about 6-8” of the foot of the bed slides under cabinets when all slides are in. The bed is still usable but a bit awkward.

The general answer is that it depends on the model. Our 2015 DSDP 4313 required the bed to be articulated before the slide could close. This seems to be the exception -- and that floorplan is unusual in other ways, too. But it does vary.

Our Ventana 4310 is like this, but it is not a problem...we have slept in parking lots like this without an issue.

Thank you all so much for the replies - you all have been extremely helpful!
We are mainly looking for the 4018 floorplan. I don't mind the bed going under the cabinets either...we'll mainly be sleeping with the slides out but on those quick stops I'd love to be able to catch some shut-eye without having to level, put slides out, etc, or allow someone to take a nap during a drive.
Can't thank you all enough for the great info!

The bed is flat on our Ventana bud a few inches are under the closet. You can still sleep this way.

If it helps, the king bed in our Bay Star is flat will the slide will close with the mattress flat. In fact, we've got a California king in there that's 4 inches longer than your standard RV king. It fits, though we do deflate it.
