Black Tank Rinse Vacuum Breaker

The Vacuum Breaker for our Black Tank Rinse is leaking when water is first turned on. What is the purpose of the green tape? See photo.

Since Newmar will no longer send warranty replacement parts I need to find one elsewhere. Does anyone know of an online source? And, are these vacuum breakers universal?

You can replace this plastic one with a much better brass device that is available at any Home Depot, Lowes, Ace etc. They are used on every residential hot water tank. Very common.
You will need to also buy two 1/2" NPT Close Nipples to go from the female to male connection. It will be a direct replacement. No other mods required.

Does anyone know why Newmar wrapped the vacuum breaker with green tape?

A guy at Camping World said the tape was causing the leak, but I doubt it.

Since water is leaking out from underneath the tape I am reluctant to remove it. It might shoot water everywhere. I think I will wait until I get a replacement before removing the tape.

Our previous Tiffin Allegro Bus had the same tape on the vacuum breaker so I assume it has some function.

Not sure why they would wrap that valve but if it did in fact cause it to leak, if you remove the tape the leak should quit.
I replaced that plastic valve twice after it leaked into my basement. Fortunately I had a plastic tub with my spare fluids just below the point where it came through so did not flood the basement. Second time around, it was replaced with a brass valve. (At a third the cost of the plastic valve)

Common sense would suggest that painters tape on a plumbing fixture is not the way it should properly work...

Get the brass replacement.

The vacuum breaker is under the sink in the half bath in mid coach.

after some looking - this seems to be a good solution, prevents air from coming from the black tank

Check Valve/Vacuum Breaker, 1/2″ MPT, Bulk - Valterra.com | Valterra.com

Also - need to consider the air admittance valves as well, for example

STUDOR 1-1/2 in. or 2 in. PVC Mini Vent Adapter-20341 - The Home Depot

I never liked having this inside the RV, so I removed mine and replaced it with a 90 deg elbow.

People will say that you need this per plumbing code...and if you wanted, you could install a vacuum break on the hose connection in the wetbay.

Your fittings can be unscrewed by hand. Get a 90 Deg "Street Ell", it has male threads on one side, and also get a close nipple to give you male thread on the other side.

Regards,

Dan

The one in my 5th wheel would get loose and leak. The cap twists on...

Maybe the tape is supposed to keep it from backing off and leaking. I haven't stuck my head under the sink to check our Ventana yet..,or to see if the cap can be loosened or tightened by a simple twist.

Here's a link to the installation instructions utilizing the B&B 571 Vacuum Breaker which details that a leak can occur if the water pressure is too low to seat the valve (page 4).

http://www.bandbmolders.com/files/Th...2_Install_.pdf

In this link in post 12 there is a sketch of a vacuum breaker and how it basically works. This is a good thread detailing a leak and many reply discussions.

http://www.irv2.com/forums/f54/maide...ht-332510.html

BTW, i bought a new B&B 571 Vacuum Breaker and I bought an additional 90 degree elbow with 1/2" male fittings. If the new one leaks I can change it out to with the elbow and continue to flush the black tank. As suggested, it's a code thing to have it from the factory. You can put an elbow on and use a water hose mounted vacuum breaker. They're available at HD and other hardware stores.

If yours is leaking significantly, it's probably bad. It's common.

Hope this helps...

Thanks for that information. Evidently the B&B vacuum breaker is prone to leaking when water pressure is first applied.

Valterra makes a clear plastic vacuum breaker. Does anyone know if it leaks as well?
