Broken Battery tray latch

Tray latch broke yesterday when I went to service the house batteries. Was unable to open tray until I shook it and the parts fell out. It appears to be welded together with no easy way to latch. Drilling down through the tray and frame work below it and installing two long bolts seems like the obvious fix.
Anyone have a better idea?
I have a 08 KSDP 3910.

That's the fix many of us have done. Works great. I drilled mine at a downward angle on each front corner from the tray out thru the frame on the side.

See if this helps with fixing.

Mine did the same thing. Ordered new paddle lock from Northern Tools and welded back in.

I just love Perry. Ordered it and welded it in. Got it cut out this afternoon. Used a grinder and Dremel for close work on the welds. Sawsall for the lower welds and to cut the angle metal to get the box surround out. Prybar to bend the angle metal to remove the box. There's a cold chisel and hammer used somewhere in the process. Now off to the truck body shop tomorrow to see about a replacement. Hopefully a friend who is a better welder than I has the time to put it back together.
Really thanks for the help. Still plan to use the pins to carry some of the load for the latch.

After several fixes of the latch I finally just drilled two holes, used two 21/2" bolts dropped thru and wala... No more problems....Don

Jack I believe the pins have a spring loaded ball bearing to keep in place until you pull it out of hole.

Broken battery tray latch

Jack - mine broke too. Had a fellow cut a piece of 90 degree angle iron and drill a hole to make a retainer. Works well photos below. Joel
