Canyon Star 3710 vs Open Road 36LA

Looking for options on plus or minus of these two units. Would appreciate any real world experience. Think 2016 or newer.

We just purchased our 3710 in January and had our first weekend aboard this past weekend.

We shopped Tiffin, Winnebago, Thor and Georgetown by Forest River. Newmar won our business for a variety of reasons including proximity to dealership. Thankfully we live in the Orlando area and there are literally dozens of rv dealers to choose from covering nearly every brand.

Best advice would be to compare them as close to possible from a quality of construction standpoint. Then decide if don't mind where the dealership is located and go from there.

Most manufacturers have multiple layouts in similar sizes across the brands, most use similar components where you can see and touch (not all) but most.

I think the differences become evident in what you don't see or touch and that is where the differences start to mount.

Both Tiffin and Newmar are neck and neck as to quality and are in the same category of quality.

I think in your case comparing those two brands, you should go with what feels more comfortable, proximity to dealership and layout.

Brand wise, your comparing apples to apples. Hope this helps.

We just purchased (3/1) a 3710, love the coach. We too boiled it down to Tiffin & Newmar. IMO the finish is better in the Newmar, the cabinetry just looks better.

The sons are taking over Tiffin from their dad, they have now started making 5th wheels. I'm not sold in the near future it will be the same company, just my opinion.

We also like *if* we want factory service I can make an appointment with Newmar, with Tiffin just get in line.

We love our new coach and wouldn't change a thing. It all comes down to what you like and need.

Best of luck,
Steve

DW and I will never forget the Tiffin salesman that told us "Tiffin's are almost the same quality as a Newmar". I put in quotes because DW and I will never forget someone trying to sell us a Tiffin, telling us that it was almost as good. Glade he did because we love our CS, but if I was his boss I would question his technique.

Both of those will be on the Ford F53 chassis, so I think the house and floor plan differences will become your deciding factors. The big difference between those two brands is that Tiffin uses vacuum bonded laminated panels for the roof and sidewalls, whereas Newmar uses "hung wall" construction and fiberglass batt insulation. IMO, the difference in insulation makes Newmar the better choice, but I know that Tiffin makes a quality coach which most likely has larger cabinets and better use of storage space in general. For most things the components will be almost identical, and equally prone to failure. Both companies stand behind their products, but factory service, even while under warranty, is a crap shoot because you wait at Tiffin and you wait to get an appointment at Newmar. Are you closer to Red Bay or Nappanee may also be a factor.

My best advice.......................buy the one your wife likes best...... "happy wife, happy life" comes to mind.

We were comparing these same 2 units when shopping as well. Our dealer of choice sells both brands so that made side by side comparison easy. Both units have their plus and minus factors. For us, the deciding factor was how much quieter the Newmar was, inside. The dealers lot is next to a busy interstate, it was amazing how much outside noise the Newmar blocked out. Ours does have the upgraded ceiling insulation and fiberglass roof options. Both are very nice rigs and there is really not a bad choice to be made here. Which one do you like better?

I think the 36LA has a queen bed the CS 3710 a king. Ditto on the insulation the Newmar is much quieter inside - batt versus foam insulation. Both have nice cabinets and finishes. I think the Tiffin uses Tripp inverter (s) and Newmar Xantrax. Newmar will do special (off sheet) custom options whereas Tiffin does not. Do both come on the 16k chassis ? I think Tiffin upgraded to the 16k recently. Think stacked washer dryer is not a Tiffin option - they offer a combo in rear bath. We have been to Red Bay and Napanee - both are great. Good luck with your decision !!

26k chassis

I like that our cargo capacity is at 4,185 lbs, that's a pretty good number for a gas coach.

These are two of the three coaches I'm looking at right now. The other is the CS 3921. As others have said the Newmar is quieter inside, is better insulated (higher R factor), won't delaminate, has the availability of a stacked W/D, is on the heavier chassis, has a much more versatile H/T system and a few other things.

That said, the Tiffin IMHO (depending upon the finish chosen) has the nicer cabinets, much nicer dash layout, better GPS and stainless appliances. That said, I have looked at several units and found the dark finish to be very hit or miss quality wise.

I wouldn't balk at buying either unit but the advantages of the Newmar swing it that way for me...

I was down to Tiffin and Newmar, it wasn't until I started really started focusing on the details that I choose Newmar. I am very happy with my choice. The most important thing is to take your time and pick the coach than will make you the most happy. Then you will see it will be a Newmar LOL. Good Luck
