Canyon Star CCC

We have been considering updating to a new coach from our current Kountry Star gasser. However, the weight of the new Canyon Stars has pretty much ruled out a gas coach from Newmar. I have been looking at numerous weight stickers, and considering my towed vehicle is roughly 4,600 lbs, when I subtract the additional 600 lbs from the sticker CCC plus a tank of water and the two of us, about the only thing I can carry is a box of crackers. Guess we are pretty frustrated at this point since we don’t want a diesel. Has anyone else been running the numbers on these coaches? The new floor plans seem to be very heavy.

I have been looking at the 2019 CS3710 specs. Its ratings are GCWR 30,000 lb, GVWR 26,000 lb and UVW 20,500 lb. Using up the 5,500 lb cargo capacity still leaves 4,000 lb for a flat tow. Think I would be hard pressed to use more than 3,000 lb of the load capacity leaving plenty of room to tow at the hitch capacity of 5,000 lb.

The CS3710 has the largest weight capacities in the CS line. Something may have changed in the 18 &/or 19s.

We only travel with 2/3 fresh water but with topped off fuel and propane tanks, all out stuff (which is a lot) I still have 2,000 lbs of CC. We are well under our max weights.

We do tow a small jeep that weighs in at 4,060 lbs,

Send me a private message with you email address if you would like to see my mfg numbers and my cat scale numbers.

Don't forget the CCC is the GVWR less the UVW including full fuel, water, and 154x number of sleeping positions. The link below provides definitions for all the weight ratings.

The CS3710 I looked at in Hershey had a UVW of 22,212 (not 20,500) with a CCC of 3683 once the propane weight is subtracted. Taking away 600 additional for my tow, 708 for water and 350 for passengers and our Golden Retriever leaves 2,000 lbs. which is workable.

However, that’s not the floor plan we are interested in. The CS3719 has a UVW of 23,372 which has a CCC of 2,523 leaving us 865 lbs for our stuff.

Similarly, the CS3722 has a UVW of 23,581 and a CCC of 2,044. This coach only leaves us a whopping 386 lbs for out stuff.

Even the CS3513 only leaves us 696 lbs.

The coaches we are interested in forces us to travel with much less to little water or we need to get another towed vehicle, which we have only had four months.

You have done your research, cudos to you for not joining the 95% of gas coaches running dangerously overweight. I saw one this week with a stacker trailer! Almost every one I see is towing overweight. Tiffin is doing a recall to reinforce gas coach hitches and place a sticker with more easily understood max tow ratings on the hitch. I think a Newmar will have to follow them because most owners think it looks like a big rig so it should be able to tow/haul just like the Diesels.

Wow - the options on these coaches add more weight than I suspected. Wonder if Newmar has a sheet that gives not only price but also weight impact of each option. That would really help in building a coach that met an individual’s needs.

When we ordered our Bay Star last year, the Production Report listed out what Newmar considered the "base" weight, and for each option listed the net addition to that weight. So I guess technically they must know what the impact is. I didn't have this information until final sign-off on what they were to build. I'm also not sure how accurate each of those numbers are. In addition, we had specials in our build and they did not list impact for, which leaves some weight out of the equation.

Hi vettenuts,
The problem you post has been around forever. In 2005 I went through the same thing. Always had gas coaches. Didn't want diesel. Searched and searched for the floor plan we needed and the ability to tow 5100 #s.. Finally gave up and bought the 2005 KSDP. Been very happy with it. I was dragged into diesel kicking and screaming. However, it has turned out very well.

I just reviewed the 2019 brochure compared to those coaches I have had access to for a photograph of the weight sticker. The brochure would lead you to believe there is a lot more CCC available. Based on my research to date, the only CS that may fit our needs is the 3710 but I haven't gotten into a couple of the coaches with floor plans we like.

We do like a lot of the new floor plans but the CCC is killer for us.

The ones we have looked at had fiberglass roofs, which I prefer. However not sure how much weight this adds over the numbers listed in the brochure or if this is the majority of the weight difference.

I actually have the same year Kountry Star 3742 gasser and we have plenty of CCC to work with. I also have the fiberglass roof upgrade. My coach seems to be very rugged so its a mystery to me why the newer coaches are so heavy.

The weight difference between the bare Ford chassis from 24K to 26K is less than 50 lbs. so that is not a contributor.

We're doing okay with our new 3513.

We don't carry a lot of extra "stuff", it's only the two of us, and we tow a small light car.

Just wanted to add one more weight for a 2019 that I received from a forum member who has a new 3627. The UVW is 22,796 and the CCC is 3,099 lbs. We really like this floor plan and the numbers work for us so it is very high on our Newmar final list. Plus, the TV is actually at a proper viewing angle
