Try push and twist, like childproof medicine bottles.

We found out how to do ours the hard way when it started beeping because of low battery. My wife twisted until it broke off! Only later did I find a small pin on the base of the detector right next to the ceiling that you have to pull out before you twist, then it comes off nicely .
We managed to repair the mount with some pieces of sheet metal I cut and bent. Hopefully I posted this in time so you don't repeat our mistake, if your detector has the same type of pin .

A lot depends on the make and model. I just twist a bit and it comes out of the holder.
As other have pointed out, some get creative with locking pins.

Overthemtn,
I see you are at it again, why did you wait 6 years to change a battery that is recommended to be changed annually?
Who installed the orignal battery, the detector manufactuer, the dealer or some one else other than Newmar?
It's easy to throw stones without being fully informed.

Also for what it's worth- I buy a new carbon monoxide detector every 3 to 4 years. The detectors apparently loose their ability to detect over time. I want mine working good, so for the relatively low cost I replace mine.

My thoughts exactly. Not sure what the agenda is, apparently just to badmouth Newmar at every chance.

A carbon monoxide detector is often overlooked by RV'ers. It is a good idea to check them carefully for an expiry date each year when you change the batteries. My experience shows that they need to be changed between 3 to 7 years, depending on the manufacturer. Check out my website for more information on RV-Marine Carbon Monoxide Detectors
