Caulk type suggestion

We were waxing the beast (our 2005 DS) yesterday and we noticed a couple of areas where the caulk has started to lift away from the RV body. It is where two body pieces join. It looks like some type of clear caulk that was used to keep water out. Any suggestions on the type Newmar uses or can I just use any superior type of clear caulk at Home Depot? Thanks for any help.

On the body panels I believe Newmar uses a Silicone based sealant. Home Depot has lots.

Obviously it should be for exterior use. A call to Newmar would might also be beneficial asking for their recommendations. Have your vin and coach sn ready if needed. We also have a few areas on our coach they will need to be addressed soon.

You go to the COM_NET LINK and look for sealants for your coach 2005.
This is the one they used on your coach click on Catalog Model Year.

Thanks all for your suggestions. I decided to email Newmar for the recommendation. Hopefully I will hear back some time this week. 007 I tried the com area at Newmar web site but could not get in this time. Not sure why. I will give it another shot.

Thanks

007 I finally got in to the Newmar Com site and it appears that the caulk is just a basic caulk - 301. Thanks for the help.

Has anyone moved to a longer lasting non-silicone solution like ProFlex with any downsides? I did this on my last 5th wheel and couldn't believe the difference between the OEM caulk.

I second Spencer's question. I've been looking at the Pro Flex, too... it's pretty cheap on Amazon:

I know that once something has been sealed with silicone, most other things won't stick. Didn't know if anyone's tried using the Pro Flex to repair/reseal things that had been sealed with silicone originally.

I've heard that silicon caulk will not even seal, to its old stuff. Hopefully, most know to get the old stuff off completely and clean the area well before applying new caulk regardless of the type.

I get it from Menards. It's for siding and comes in several colors. Don't use silicone.

Thanks for clarifying that, JC2. That's what I meant, but wasn't clear.

Even if you remove the old silicone, what do you clean the fiberglass surface with to remove the silicone residue? I was under the impression that once you've used silicone, it's next to impossible to completely clean the surface again so that anything else will stick... you have to use silicone again.

I've been wrong before, though!

Didn't know Menards carried it. Good to know! Thanks!

I've had good success with a sealant called "Lexel", available at most good hardware stores, like Ace. Have not seen it at HD, Lowes, etc.
