CB radios

Have an older coach that was optioned with a CB radio.

Have been researching as to why it doesn't work, think I have it traced down to a bad antenna coil spring, so we will see or hopefully hear something.

I noticed that Newmar hasn't offered a CB as an factor option since 2012

Are these things like dinosaurs now, and no one uses them any more?

We use ours when traveling with other RVer's. If I remember right Newmar suggested we use channel 17. Do not have CB on unless we are traveling with a group. Still find most of our travel groups have a CB. Nice to have it when you need it.

I just carry a handheld. Doesn't have much range but works in a traffic jam.

I am currently on a WIT Club caravan and we are using them on channel 13. I have a hand held, but wish I had an outside antenna. We have 22 units on the caravan, we are in Palmer Alaska right now.

I installed an updated one a few months ago to replace the dead one in my 2002 Trek. The new one has a number of nice features like channel scan, and weather radio alerts though I mainly use it, along with a handheld for camp ground maneuvering. It lets the driver be mostly hands free while the spotter can give directions on the handheld with none of the delay of cell phones. (on cell phones there can be a 1+ second delay between when the speaker stops talking before the listener hears what they say see Wireless Notes -- Digital CellularVoice Latency/Voice-over-IP Latency and Voice Delay caused by Digitization )

My previous rig, a Georgetown xl had an outside antenna and I still didn't get much range. It was supposed to be a special antenna designed to work without a ground plane. Since I didn't have much luck, I didn't bother with an antenna model in the Newmar.
