Change Flooring Carpet to ??

My wife is a bit of a clean freak and we travel with 2 small dogs. It is a bit of work to keep the carpet clean, particularly in sandy RV parks. I understand that changing out carpets for something else involves changing the slide rollers so it is not a simple job. I got an estimate from Newmar of $5000 for parts and $12000 for labour for a total of $17,000 . That isn't going to happen. Any experience in changing carpet to tile or synthetic material that is easier to clean?
Thankyou

My carpet had been replace w/ wood when I bought it. I did replace the carpet on the living slide, which was an easy task. I found a carpet store w/ 15' widths, and ordered a piece for $150.00. Using the old piece for a template, I had the binding people cut the new piece and had the inside edge bound for $50.00. Then, I installed it. It staples down on the wall and end edge. I used a pneumatic stapler.

I did have a surprise issue when I removed the factory J Sofa and Wrap around booth. Taking the weight off the wall side allowed the slide-out to tip differently and the bottom of the slide hung up on the floor when coming in. It took about 45 minutes with a file to file away the area beneath the slide causing the problem. It has been working fine for a year or so.

We also travel with dogs but even if it was just the two of us carpet is a terrible choice for a RV (I think). If I was to replace flooring i would stay with the tile. However since your coach didn't come with tile the weight may be too much so maybe look at the luxury vinyl. I love wood but not so much in a motorhome as it doesn't do well with water.

I changed the carpet in our 2003 Gas Mountainaire to an engineered wood floor 5 years ago, when we first got it. Only did the front area back to the bathroom. What a difference, I've gotten many complements on it. After 5 years we are getting a few scratches on the floor, but it still looks good. We also use plastic pads under the rollers. I used 4 feet of hall runner in 1 foot pieces, but you might want to use something a little heavier as we are getting a few marks from the rollers that were not installed square to the slide travel.

Good luck!! I did the work my self and it cost about $2000 for the materials. The hardest thing was removing the thousands of staples used to hold the carpet in place.

We installed sheet vinyl in our previous coach. Less that $1000 materials and professional installation. Had a flooring guy do it - not a RV guy. Living, kitchen, and hallway. Left the carpet in the slide. No changes needed to slides, the carpet was higher than the sheet vinyl. Way best change we made to the coach. Search my username for a thread with pictures and details.

Went with luxury vinyl tiles here also. It was about 40 hours to remove the glued on laminate and carpets and 60 hours to install the Armstrong LVTs. Installed them diagonally and left space for grout (special grout from Armstrong). Tiles about $1500 with glue and grout... Very very happy with result, so so so easy to maintain, went with a light gray.

LVT here also. We used Manington Adura 16"x16" tiles, glued down and grouted just like a residential installation. It has the feel and appearance of quarry tile. It's been in for 5 years now and still looks new. We love it.

We had lots of other remodeling done at the same time but I estimate that the total floor cost was around $6000.

Here is what we used:

http://www.mannington.com/Residentia.../Corsica/AT222

It's been too long & I can't remember the quantity we used. I let my installer order. We did the complete floor from the firewall to the engine step up in the bed room. Lots of labor to remove the porcelain tile that made up about 1/2 the old floor. Lots of tile cuts. They installed a layer of 1/4" underlayment also. No issues at all with slides or rollers. We use a product caller "slide slickers" to protect the floor when the flush floor slide is retracted.

I replaced all the carpet and vinyl tile with hardwood. Did not need to replace any rollers. Cost me less than $2,000 for materials.

We had carpeting throughout including the bathroom. Left the carpeting on the slide and the bedroom, but went with a commercial grade LVT which looks just like hardwood. We have on scratch which appears to be from a staple underneath the slide securing the carpeting which we will have looked at when we get down to LA. But we also have 1/2 a box of material left so we can easily replace the scratch piece.

Had it done by Dave Jaramillo of Southland Flooring in Anaheim. We love our new floor and very easy to clean.
