Considering replacing the anode on my "new" preowned 08 Newmar KS DP (heater model # is SW10DE). Any recommended dos and donts (or a webside to walk me through the procedure). Particularly interested in the white coating on the existing anode base. I assume it's plumber tape but am not certain. Thanks!

Hi glemo81540,
I do mine every couple of years. It's one of the more easy maintenance tasks. Make sure everything is off. Relieve the water pressure. Stand to the side when you unscrew the anode rod. Once out and drained, power flush the tank. I purchased the tool at CW. Flushing with water pressure helps get out any crude in the bottom of the tank.

Hi Gary, I just recently winterized my motorhome and I use compressed air. Having first removed the drain plug .... I cranked up the compressor and it shot the water out of the heater at 30 psi! Now that's under pressure! My Atwood heater stays pretty clean and I don't have to use a suicide rod.

Could be calcium build-up or plumbers tape. Suburban water heaters require anode rods because they have steel tanks. Atwood water heaters have aluminum tanks and do not need anode rods (don't put an anode in an Atwood water heater). Plumbers tape just makes a better seal around the threads.

Do not leave to much plumbers tape on new rod, rod needs metal to metal contact for it to work properly.
If the old rod looks fairly new, not much deterioration may have to much tape on it.
