Charging System #2

Well the other post is "locked closed" for some reason but here is an update.

Went out and inspected the batteries, looking for the "temperature sender" on one of the battery terminals. I thought I had located it, before, but upon further inspection, there was no sender on any terminal.

Inspected the back of the battery area, and low and behold, there was a wire laying back there.

I was pretty sure this was it because of the distinct yellow color insulation. Here is the problem. It had been "cut off" and was never hooked up. I don't know why it made a difference when I plugged and unplugged it. Maybe it was making contact with something, but it sure wasn't the batteries.

Now I don't know if I should replace it, or just let it ride, as it has been like this for the past year and a half, or more, since I purchased the coach.

Any thoughts if this sensor is really that important to fix?

We owned a 04 Essex for 13 years and the sensor got damaged at least 10 years ago and never replaced and never had any issues with charging batteries. Most of travels were in the south.

If you're not going to either warm or cold extreme you should be fine. Unlike our family who want to go snowboarding and skiing in our coach, or others who like being in the desert when it's 110 degrees, most like to "chase the t-shirt and short pants" weather and those temperature ranges are fine with no temp sensor.

If you do go to those extremes you may under or overcharge the battery, overcharging is no problem with flooded cells, that's what equalization does. However you may potentially have battery acid spills and you will ned to keep a close eye on levels in the batteries.

I actually found a "new" temperature probe on ebay and will install it, after talking with Xantrex support, if they recommend it... I want them also to confirm where it should go, as there seems to be some disagreement on this issue...

Okay... After talking with Xantrex support, here is what they said.

1. The Temperature Sensor is an optional device that is used to vary the charging program, taking the battery temperature into its programming. If you have no sensor, the Inverter/Converter will default to the "medium" programming. There are several different types of sensors, so get the one that the manual states, or a part number off the old one. They also emailed me a more complete Inverter/Converter manual.

2. In my situation, with two 12V engine batteries and 4 6V house batteries, the probe needs to go on the side of one of the "house" batteries (if yours is a "sticky back" type probe), or on one of the negative post of the house batteries (if yours has a mounting plate on the probe). He said to look for the "smaller" gauge cable connecting the house negative batteries and put it on that post. The other post will have larger gauge cables going off into the coach.

3. He said that if you have a programmable RC Trace monitor, make sure it is programmed for the type of batteries that you have installed. Unfortunately I have an RC6 monitor and that appears not to be programmable. The RC7 is...

4. Finally... he also told me how to do a "hard reset" on the Inverter/Converter. First, disconnect the shore power. Next, disconnect the positive lead off the Inverter/Converter. Then, let the system set for one hour to make sure all the electronics are "discharged." Finally, hook everything back up, in reverse steps....

If I have more info, after getting a new probe and setting it up, I'll let you know...
