I've searched and read a bunch of threads and manuals to no avail.

98 MA40dp the chassis batteries die when underway.

Brand new house and chassis batteries.

Removed alternator (160 amp) had it checked out, load tested, everything ok

On the Genset or AC, the house batts will charge till full then the chassis batts get charged.

I checked the BIRD per the troubleshooting guide, no problem

BIRD does not trigger relay, if I trigger relay, the chassis batts will charge from alternator.

Seems I need to replace the BIRD?

Thoughts or suggestions?

Chassis batteries should be charged first from alternator when engine running than will charge the house.
You may have it right on the Bird System there are different Birds for DP's and wiring.
Look down midpoint for trouble section.

I have an earlier version, just says diesel, no -2 but it looks the same.

Can someone recommend where to buy BIRD?

sanjoh, the trouble section would be the same for testing for problem.
You may have the 00- 00366-000 that is discontinued and is replaced by the 00-00893-000 and is $52 on this web site.
