Check Fiberglass Panels at Wheels!!

Boy was I surprised when I stopped for the day yesterday. I checked the screws at the other wheels and several was very loose. I had a bolt with a lock nut and installed it where the missing screw was gone. I have no idea how this has been flapping in the wind.

While washing the RV I noticed the same thing - the screws holding those panels were all loose. It's now on my regular check list. There's just no end:-)

Yup, Self Tappers on mine. Just replaced a fender on the rear. $900 from Newmar. I was right on the edge of using the other side as a fiberglass mold...then too many projects on the list became evident...

Yup, happened to us during first month, with the panel in front of the front tire. It was flapping completely horizontally while on the highway.

Same here, had to replace screws on both sides in first year. Now I just check them every trip. Have three screws on each side so I doubt they would all break at the same time. No issues since replacing with bigger screws.

Fender screws

Just be careful and not to over tighten them. Especially if the fender does not contact the under body or has a missing rubber bumper. I have two that are cracked because of missing bumper when assembled. I had it looked at at Nappanee. They installed the bumper but it is still cracked.

I put dabs of silicone adhesive on the back of the screws to help prevent them from backing out.

This is a very common problem. ''there is a reason manufacturers use sheet metal screws. "speed". It only takes 3 seconds to run in a sheet metal screw. At our dealership, I always removed the sheet metal screw and added a bolt and lock nut, if I could access both front and back of the attachment point. If one side was closed, I would add a dab of epoxy under the screw head and in the thread hole. I only did this to loose screws. Most screws do hold.

It certainly was not an easy job to put on a nut and bolt. I had to lay down in the grass which had ants crawling everywhere. I then had to hold the nut between my fingers and work by feel only.

I have lost one myself, I check it ever trip as I double check ALL basement doors.
I was more concerned with that long screw ended up in my tire.
