Class III hitch specs needed for 2002 DSDP 4095

I need some numbers.

What is the Maximum Gross Trailer Weight AND Maximum Tongue Weight of the Class III hitch on a 2002 Newmar Dutch Star DSDP 4095?

I'm trying to find a way to safely carry a 200-lbs dirt bike while flat towing a 2010 Honda CR-V.

Thanks.

Liz

Liz do you have a Owners Guide, the guide should have weight info in it and some info on towing.

Class III hitch specs needed for 2002 DSDP 4095

Liz.....
A Class III hitch in a plain Weight Carrying setup is rated for 6000 Lb max trailer weight and 600 Lb max tongue weight. Installed in a Weight Distributing setup, the rating increases to 10000/1000 Lbs. Of course, these max hitch ratings are subject to any lower limitation of the vehicle on which the hitch is mounted, but no such limitation will come into play on your 40 Ft chassis.
When flat towing you have very little tongue weight, perhaps about 50 Lbs-- the weight of your tow bar set. In your case, you will have to add the weight of the bike and bike rack to both the tongue weight and the total trailer weight. So, 200 Lbs of bike and perhaps 70 (?) Lbs of rack.
Your CRV weighs about 3500 Lbs empty, but you'll likely be carrying some stuff in there when you travel, so let's call it 4000 Lbs.
So,.... Tongue Weight is tow bar (50), bike rack (70), bike (200). Total=320Lbs.
Trailer Weight is tow bar (50), bike rack (70), bike (200), and CRV (4000). Total = 4320 Lbs.
4320/320 is less than 6000/600, so it would appear you ought to be ok.

Good explanation John. Agree the OP should be well within weight requirements.

The Owners Guide says (page 9-1):

"On the rear of this unit you will find a class three, 5,000 pound car towing hitch."

According to eTrailer, weight ratings for Class III trailer hitches range from:
  • Maximum gross trailer weight: 3,500 lbs to 6,000 lbs
  • Maximum tongue weight: 300 lbs to 600 lbs
I assume this means that the MTW is 500 lbs?

Thanks.

Thanks John,

The problem is that I need a hitch extender to get the bike carrier far enough away from the back of the MH. A hitch extender reduces capacity by 50% so we're looking at 300 lbs instead o 600 lbs.

2008 Yamaha TW200 = 260 lbs
Bike carrier = 91 lbs

The bike and carrier = 351 lbs which exceeds 300 lbs

Am I missing something?

See....., now you've changed the specs after initiating the project. I feel like I'm back at work. 😏

The OG is generally what it is for that year, if your going to change to higher value you should check with chassis MFG and see if there would be a problem doing that.
Ride Height may need adjustment for one.

My 02 has a 10000# rated hitch receiver. I called Newmar to find out what was installed originally!
