Hi,

the instructions for replacing the fuel water separator say to coat the gasket with some clean fuel... Where do you get the clean fuel? Do you just use the fuel that you drained from the filter at the start?

I use clean engine oil.

That's what I used to do, just used clean fuel that was drained from the housing. No issues.

Hi hrt; You can use any fuel that is left in the filter. They just don't want any dirt, water or etc, to be on the gasket. Just make sure the mounting base where the gasket comes into contact is clean. You can use any type of lube you want to on the gasket as long as you are not getting that lube into the filter itself. For years on many gaskets like oil filters or spin on fuel filters, I use a very, very small amount of grease. I mean just enough to make the gasket shinny. Has worked for me for the last 50+ years with no ill affects.

8.3oilburner is right. The diesel fuel on the gasket serves only as a lubricant when tightening the filter.

Read the instructions again. You coat the seal with a drop of oil BUT you fill the filter with clean fuel.
I don't have "clean fuel" hanging around so I fill my filter with SeaFoam or Stanadyne. These will give your injectors a good clean when you start the engine
