Closet Rod Collapse

I just spent most of the day repairing the closet rod in my coach because it completely collapsed on the way to National in Tenn. But, we completed our planned vacation before doing any repairs.

The rod mounting is a very poor design and will probably fail at some point due to the weight of the clothes, the bouncing of the coach or a combination of both.. You may want check how your closet rod is mounted. I found that the only thing that holds it up was a few screws that holds each end of the rod and some glue/staples that holds the bottom cover of the shelf. The center support was screwed into a board sandwiched between the bottom cover and the top shelf. But, the board was not attached to anything other some glue the held it to the 1/8 luan bottom cover. The bottom cover is held to bottom of the top shelf with some glue and staples.

To start with I added 3 1x6 support boards under the top shelf. The center support was need to support the closet rod and the top shelf. The other 2 were need to support the top shelf as the shelf is nothing more than 1/8 luan with a fabric cover. I used pocket holes and glue to mount the boards to each side rail. I then remounted the bottom cover with some glue and a air powered brad nailer. This cover is mostly for decoration but serves a mount for the closet light. I made a new center support out of piece of 2x4. I replaced the chrome closet rod with a piece of 3/4 conduit as the original one was only about 1/16 tubing. I used pocket holes to mount the end and center rod supports.

I expected better from Newmar.

Would have to agree with you on that one. I removed a rod so I could add shelves in my washer-drier closet and it had only two screws thru board with hole in it to support the rod into 1/8" plywood. Had a Bounder with the rear closet and had to do exactly what you did. At least we know thats its right now.
