Just curious. When plugged into shore power, is my coach battery being charged along with my house batteries?

Yes. Newmar uses a BIRD, you should see it above your engine in a box with a clear plastic cover (at least that is where it is in our 2008 Canyon Star). You can verify that it is working by measuring the voltage at the chassis battery. It should be the same as the house batteries, about 13.8V if you have the standard Iota converter.

Here is a thread on the BIRD your chassis battery will be charged after your house batteries come to full charge than the BIRD system will maintain house at full charge plus now charge the chassis battery.

Just so there not left out DP owners have a B.I.R.D. also.

All this information and more can be found in Quick Tips & Mods.

This is a picture in the power cord compartment of our DP. The wiring in the back is normally covered with a black cardboard that is held there by velcro. The BIRD is here along with the recepticle to plug in the engine block heater. Also, the Iota charger and inverter are located in this compartment.

I have had several Heated Dissagreements about that;; We had 3 different coaches That would not charge the chassis when pluged in to shore power;;; We have a newer Winnebago DP; I went to start it the chassis batteries were dead; They were replaced 1 year ago 2 of them. After a lot of calls; To the factory. I installed a battery charger/tender. To the chassis batteries. now everything is ok;; If some one says your Iscolator/bird is not working, I Just scratch my haed and say they just don't get it.. NOT all systems charge. The battries.. I am only stating My facts.. Life is good.

bachler you need a NEWMAR if you want all your batteries charged.
The BIRD system will do that.

Buying a Newmar to get a BIRD may not be the most economical thing you can do. There are cheaper options :-)

Winnebago have been fitting the Trik-L-Start as standard on their motorhomes for some time, so depending on how old yours is, it may have this installed. If you do have this, then both your battery banks will be charged when on shore power.

I have owned 7 coaches Including a NewMar; Then i bought a Real coach;; In the 2001 newmar we were sitting in the seat behind the driver A friend was sitting next to me and said look here ;; There was a gap between the window and the wall you could look out, they said they would take it back to the factory and fix it.. I said wait this is a new coach;; So why would anyone tell me to buy a newmar;; Maybe they are adding things like the BIRD to make up for there shortcommings;;; Life is good.. Buy what you are happy with; I buy what i'm happy with, And I respect anyones opion
