Comfort Drive 2007/2008

I test drove a 2007 Essex today and found it had adjustable comfort drive. It was on the steering column and was a dial just like I have seen on the dash. Do all 2007-2008 Essex have the adjustable comfort drive?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum and irv2.
Here is a Brochure and Owners Guide for you.
Here is a link to TSB's for what ever your you maybe interested in.
The Essex and maybe the MADP were the only ones that have CD, 2008 on all highline coach's had it starting with the DSDP.
All the links below in my signature have more info on any Newmar.
Good luck in your hunt for a Newmar.

I am pretty sure Comfort Drive didn't come till 08 and the first year it wasn't adjustable.

That is what I read as well,,,but the 2007 EXDP that I just drove had the adjustment on the steering column. I was wondering if this was just a test or a running change mid season and if all the 2008 EXDP had the adjustment on the column?

Woohoo Were you able to detect a difference when adjusting the knob?

Yes I did. It is the same knob that you find on the dash now,,,,but it was on the steering column on the left side. Can the non adjustable be refitted? Was there a mid season change or did the Essex have the adjustment from the start?

In 2007, Comfort Drive was on Mountain Aire and above. In 2008 I believe all Diesels had it.

Thanks 66. Do you know whether it was adjustable in 07/08 on Essex and if not,,,could it be retrofitted with the adjustment knob?

I do not have the VINs available to me since I retired but about a dozen coaches were built with adjustable efforts about a year before it went into production. The coach the original poster drove must have been one of them. The good news is both the hardware and software in that coach is the same as what has been in production since then so there is no worry about driving a prototype. As far as the control being on the column vs being on the dash, it is just a pot so it can be put anyplace. Frankly, I prefer it on the column.

Thanks for the explanation Ken! So, can the non-adjustable be converted by Spartan or Newmar?

This has been covered several times before but it is not practical to upgrade a non-adjustable system to an adjustable one. The CD itself sufficiently different in both hardware and software that it must be changed out, but that's not the bad news. The control knob is actually connected to the ECU that runs the dashboard in order to generate a control signal that the CD is able to understand. Much of the dashboard system would have to be redesigned to refit a newer dash ECU into the old dash. That would get prohibitively expensive for one coach.

We have an '08 Ventana built in May of "07 and it has a non-adjustable CD. So far after driving it near 10K miles...Have to say I LIKE It!

Cheers,
Don
