Cummins engine failure

On a return trip thru Tennessee we entered Kentucky with no problem in the Tennessee mountains, Oil pressure was constant and the temperature of the coolant remained in the normal range
Normal speed 65 mph with rpms @ 1700.
The engine light came on but none of the above readings changed.
About 30 seconds later the rear view camera "fogged up"
Thankfully an exit appeared about 30 seconds later
Pulled off into a vacant parking lot and discovered oil residue on the engine and over the entire front of the tow vehicle.
Checked the oil level and it was down to the mid range on the dip stick
Had just checked the oil the previous day and it was to the top of the range.
Started the engine and saw oil spurting out from the right side of the engine
Perhaps 30 drops/min @ 700 rpm
RV will be towed to a Cummins dealer about 75 miles away for analysis
Any thoughts as to the cause
Engine has 29,000 miles with yearly oil changes as Freightliner.

Hope to get this resolved so we can go to Florida after Christmas

Considering the facts as presented, it’s possible a hose popped off. Maybe a hose clamp that needs to be tightened. Glad you were able to pull off safely, and caught it with some oil still in the crankcase.

Which oil line on a Cummins has a hose clamp?

On our Essex we had about the same leak and it turned out to be the dip stick tube.

Had my diesel pusher serviced at La Mesa RV in Phoenix last winter before I left for Idaho for the summer. First day out stopped to top off and noticed oil all over the back of the rig and on the from of my Jeep in tow. I opened the back engine door to inspect/investigate and found out the the cap on the filler tube was not screwed back on and just hanging by it’s lanard. What idiots work at dealerships? Lucky I caught it right away.

Yes
Our tube rusted and broke at the block. Above the retaining nut.
Made a heck of a mess.
I removed the retaining nut that held the tube in place.

This was at 10 PM in the rain.
Caped the opening with a brass cap from Lowe's at exit I pilled over at.

So we spent the night in the Lowe's lot with some helpful trucker's.

I put two quarts of oil in the next morning, estimated, amount lost and drove the 200 miles home.

Bent some half inch copper tubing and made a new tube.

Its worked flawlessly for the last few years.

A quart of hot oil can make a very ugly mess

We had a fuel injector part break. Took Cummins 3 tries to send the right part even though our mechanic ordered the correct one from the beginning. Also, a fuel line was broken and spewed oil all over the toad a week before the fuel injector problem.

Biggest problem was finding a towing service and getting them to bring their biggest tow vehicle, which is needed for 40 footers and longer.

The cause of the rupture was a leaking fuel fitting into the engine. At 700 rpm is was just drops but at 1700 rpm it was a strong steady stream.
The RV was towed from Berea KY to Cummins dealer in Hazzard KY about 85 miles. Glad we have a Cornerstone policy since their coverage allowed us to determine the facility, not the closest suitable facility. The cost for transporting the RV was $800 bill but was reduced to $300.
Only delay was finding a Cummins dealer who could store the RV inside since we had not winterized the coach. (We were returning to Ohio from Florida and evening temps were scheduled to be in the teens)
The repair was done under Cummins warranty and I noted that the new piping was much more robust and had a bracket attaching it to the engine itself.
We have since traveled 400 miles and have seen our mileage increase from 7.2 to 7.5 Believe that the fuel leak had occurred well before the line finally reptured.

Which engine do you have?
