Customary deposit on a coach order?

I had to put down $10,000 for my Ventana LE.

Winning dealer asked for $10K deposit on our Bay Star, and a couple others asked the same. I was good with that as they had a great reputation that I was comfortable with. Another dealer said $10K unless I had a lot or really odd specials that could impact the desirability of the unit if I walked, which I understand. Last dealer tried to claim because it was an order and with specials they needed 50% up front ... which was a non starter.

We ended up with a stock unit but we did get a quote to order a new one and the deposit was going to be $10K.

We paid $20k on a VTDP that we ordered, not a sale off of the lot. We added about $35k in customizations/specials to our order. This, I think, bumped up our down payment over over an off the lot sale. Pretty much what Busskipper said.

If you think about it, it makes sense. The dealer is on the hook for your custom ordered rig, should you decide to renege. At the end of the day, it all works out.
