Dash AC blower weirdness (vents start and stop blowing)

While driving with my dash AC on this week the vents would continually start and stop blowing. But when I changed the controls from AC to MAX AC the vents blew consistently.

I searched the forums but didn't find this exact issue.

Has anyone else run into this?

The vent flaps are all vacuum powered. Since you have a diesel engine, you have no engine vacuum. Up front under the windshield should be an electrically powered vacuum pump. It could be the vacuum pump is going bad and quitting every so often. With no vacuum, all airflow should be diverted to the defroster vents. The other possibility could be a leaking vacuum hose or vacuum motor that is causing the loss of vacuum and allowing the flaps to not stay on the setting you selected. Inserting a vacuum gauge in one of the lines might give you a clue as to what's going on.
