Dash AC question

My dash air has quit putting out and before I bring it in, should I hear some sort of fan running under the front when it's on? ...I dont...
The compressor turns but the lines feel ambient temp...obvious first thought...low refrigerant..but should I hear a fan outside up front???

Does the blower work? are you getting ambient air blowing through the vents?
Among many possible problems it could be as simple as a fuse. In my case it was an electrical short.

When we had air problems I never heard any fan noise up front. Being only 4 years old my first guess would be electrical as in fuses or shorts.

The fan you are refering to is the condensor fan. It may engage with the compressor or from a pressure switch. My first thought would be low freon also. Does the compressor cycle on/off? Usually with low freon on a 134 system the compressor will either cycle or not engage if low freon.
Temporarily jumpering the pressure switch ~for troubleshooting only~ may provide some answers.

Go open the back engine door and reach in and jiggles the short wire coming off the AC compressor looking from the back toward the engine-top right side. Sometimes corrodes and don't make contact and compressor won't run. Worth a shot. Also a fuse hanging off the back of the engine.

Ist you should verify if the compressor is running, with the engine running and the AC set to cool, look at the compressor and see if it is turning, the belt pulley will be turning of course, but there is a magnetic clutch that engages the compressor and the center section of the pulley must be spinning. If not, the system could be low on freon or an electrical problem as mentioned above

The condenser fan runs whenever the compressor is running.

Hi footdoc,
Below is a LINK with the AC diagram on the last page.
I don't think your compressor is running, only the pulley is turning but the clutch is not energized. At the diagram the power comes in via a 20 amp fuse (bottom left).---this
fuse may be bad.
With AC selected the blue wire gets power to the closed contact thermostat to the fan relay & the pressure switch (closed contact, unless very low freon)) to the compressor clutch.
Check if you get 12 volt DC on the blue wire in and out of the thermostat and also both sides of the pressure switch. (measure against any good ground)

Good troubleshooting !
