DEF fluid

Ok, were totally new to DEF fluid. Previous coach did not need it. So I've got a couple of questions.

After three tanks of fuel, we took our first really big trip this past weekend. We stopped at our usual Pilot Truck stop for fuel, a first weigh (see our other thread for this) and some DEF. I thought that a big truck stop like this would have DEF at a pump. They did not and only sold it in 2.5 gallon containers in the store. It was a PITA to carry three heavy 2.5 gallon DEF boxes out to the RV, parked way out in the lot.

What do you guys do for DEF? Not looking forward to physically hauling 60-80 pounds of DEF a couple thousand feet every time I need to fill that tank.

Hopefully you will not needed to refill all that often. Most Pilots/Flying Js do have DEF at the truck pumps. I know their app identifies which stations have DEF pumps

Problem so far that most people report is that the DEF pumps are on the drivers side and on a MH they put the tanks on the passenger side. So they resort to filling a container and then needing a funnel to put it in the DEF tank.
Kind of glad ours is pre DEF but would have taken that too if need be.

We design and manufacture DEF accessories that may make refilling with DEF a little easier. You can find our products at fivestardef.com and on eBay including reusable DEFJUGS, spouts, and a DEF magnet device for trouble free use of magnetic activated nozzles.

Many IRV2 forum members have purchased and use our products for DEF and can vouch for us.

Regards,

Erich

I find it a lot easier to purchase the DEF at Walmart or thru Amazon. You really don't use that much. I run the 10 gallon tank down to below 1/2, put in a couple of jugs, and carry a spare in the basement. Refill at your leisure in the campground.

Remember there are reports circulating about DEF bought at Wal*Mart and finding the jugs are filled with water. So don't buy unsealed containers.

newmarpusher,

I find the best price in store is at Walmart. It is about $11.55 for the Blue DEF which is really good compared to what the charge for the same thing at a truck stop.

I am getting ready to take another long trip to Louisiana and will be stopping by Walmart this week. The good news for me is the onboard 15 gallon DEF tank goes a long way .

I carry a six gallon plastic water container and fill it up on the drivers side then walk around and dump it into the def tank. It is unbelievably inefficient but its what I do. It's hard to believe they put the def tank on the passenger side. When at the Freightliner factory tour I brought this issue up and they said they can mount the def tanks on either side depending on where the coach builder tells them to put them. Luckily the coach doesn't use that much def so you don't have to deal with it that often.

I guess it depends how far you run on trips. We use quite a bit on the farm for two tractors and a road tractor. We buy it in 55 gallon drums for $120 at John Deere or Case tractor. You can get a squeeze pump for $100 bucks. That's the cheapest way. I figure you could make trips to Florida and back from Maryland without using expensive 2.5's. You do need a building to put it in as it should stay out of the sun.

What size def tank is in the 2015 DS 4369? I found that the tank gauge does not reflect def level until ignition is on...ergo an overflow There is no easy way to fill unless you fill at the pump. Portable containers with the wimpy hose just doesn't work

This was my first time and I didn't price shop but the DEF in 2.5 gal boxes was $19.00/box at the Pilot truck stop in CT.

I believe the DEF tank is 10gal.

Yep, I did spill a little ammonia smelly stuff all over my DEF tank. Next time I will leave the ignition ON. BTW, the 2016 Newmars have no DEF gauge but a translucent tank, which seems much more useful than my 2015 setup.

I have a small truck stop in South Dakota that sells the jugs for $9.99, so I fill up there when possible.

I've filled at trucks stops only twice in 31,000 miles. The rest is using jugs. I'll burn a full jug in one drive, so we go through a lot.

Looks like people finally got wise on the 16s.
