I am looking at a used 2007 All Star 4154 with low mileage and trying to determine what a fair price is. I know there is a bit of art to it, but any recommendations on where to look for price guidance? Or if you have a gut feel for a price.

Used prices for 'nearly' new motorhomes really depend on much the owner needs to sell it. NADA gives a low retail / avg retail of $163k/$196k but I do not think those are realistic in today's RV economy (I think NADA gets these values by simply taking the MSRP and applying a depreciation factor. Since you can probably buy new for 25-30% or more off MSRP, their formula is really not effective)

Someone in another thread mentioned that it might be possible to pick up a new 08 for about $160k so from that, I'd say you should knock another $20k for a used 07 to make it $140k. That being said, I suspect that's probably WAY less than the owner, who might have spent over $200k, would want.

For what it's worth, there's a 2008 'demo' unit that's been listed on ebay. The seller is asking $180k, bidding has gone up to $150k (although last auction only went up to $115k (possibly because prospective bidders saw that they wouldn't take $150k and decided not to bid)).

If the coach is in good shape and what you want, I'd make an offer about 20% below low NADA and let the dealer cry a bit. In this market, he may well take it and it doesn't hurt to offer low. You can always go up a bit, but it is impossible to go lower.

I think if you are looking for a recent model used vehicle then you need to tread carefully. I have been keeping a close eye on the MADP market for a while. I can tell you the NADA is meaningless in my mind. As a buyer the key is to decide what new would cost and then decide what the value of new over the used unit is to you, and that is the max you should pay.
I recently encoundered 2 4529's on ebay. The first a new 08 leftover offered by a dealer for buy it now of 345K. The second a used 08 with 11K miles and a starting bid of 360K.
I have found other cases of owners wanting more for a used unit than I could buy a new one for.

So based on that I think the only option is to look at what new would cost and devalue by the amount you think is a reasonable premium for new. This amount will vary for each person and depends on how close the used one is to your idea of perfect.

What Bruce says makes a lot of sense to me. Really need to decide what it is worth to you to buy new vs. used. I bought a slightly used coach and it was well worth the difference to me.

Anyway, to determine what the dealer has into a coach, take original retail sticker price and divide it by 1.4. This gives you original invoice. Then for each year deduct 10 to 15% off that number. Since a 2007 is 2 years old now, the value has been reduced twice.

So if the coach had a $225,000 original sticker price, the dealer would have bought it (took it on trade) at about $145,000. Give or take.

You can then figure the dealer wants to make a nice profit (or just eliminate inventory at a minimal profit.) You can figure what you want to offer.

Remember if you buy new, this is what a dealer will give you in trade. Sometimes they make it look like they are giving a customer more on trade but they are just not giving the discount they could have with a lower trade number.

These formulas came from two different GM's of RV Sales places who are friends of mine. Obviously market conditions can change the numbers.

Hope this helps.

I was able to order a new 09 Ventana for less than the dealer wanted for the new 08 Ventana they had on their lot, and I got the exact options I wanted.

There was a used 07 All Star at a dealer in NC that interested me. It was on consignment, and the owner wouldn't come down enough. I think he thought he could sell it for what he owed.

Definitely try to work a deal on ordering an 09 and compare it to the best deal you can get on that 07.

Don't forget that you get a warranty on the 09 and the exact options you want (and don't want).

The dealer might want that 07 off his lot, but the profit margin on an ordered 09 is higher. The dealer doesn't have to pay interest on a unit that you order.

That looks very nice - makes me wish I had $140k for it ( unfortunately I think my wife would probably only give me the green light up to $14k!!! )

One thing I don't like though is that they put the TV above the dinette in the slide. Isn't it covering a window there? Also I haven't stayed in a unit with it there but I would think it would it would actually not be that great of a place for it since you can't really watch it from the sofa - I prefer where Newmar usually places them on the cabinet next to that (although it might only be for a smaller one and personally I still think the ceiling mounted one at the front is a better location - even if you want a larger one, there must be a way to put one there ...) (Sounds kind of silly but since we have a young child (who has to be in bed early), we tend to watch TV/movies at night since we can't leave the mh so the TV is actually an important thing for us!).
