Diesel engine diagnostics

My 370 DP has 74 thousand plus miles. It is performing well. Has anyone out there had their engine tested on some kind of diagnostic machine? Was it very expensive?

I had mine hooked up to the Cummins insite program to have some parameters changed and there was no codes when he checked. Also I have had no lights on in the dash. If you are not getting any check engine light or having any performance issues, I would keep doing the regular maintance and keep burning fuel and having fun!

What was the cost to have that insight program? Is this like the scan gauge tool?

I have a friend that is a mechanic at a authorized Cummins truck repair shop and he has a laptop with the program. He did the changes that I wanted done to the ecm. I don't know how much it costs to get it, but I am thinking it is not cheap.

They put the computer on the cummins every year (for codes check) I go for my annual maintenance and they do not charge me extra -

They can also give you a print out. It has hours run, hours idle, top speed ran, gal. fuel used, total miles etc.

I use the Silverleaf VMSpc which shows complete diagnostics of the engine. When a code is thrown I know it right away. The VMSpc can't change Computer setting. Just monitor them. Would not leave home without it.

I take my DP to a CAT dealer for its annual service because they download all the ECM fault data as part of the service. IMHO its worth having it looked at rather than waiting until there are performance issues that become obvious.
