Dishwasher draining

Our dishwasher doesn't seem to drain 100% and if you close it up after a cycle, the standing water starts to smell. We use it less than once a week. Do others leave it open while parked to let it air dry or do I have a drainage issue?
Thanks in advance.
Bill

What brand do you have? We have a Kitchen Aide and I have not noticed whether it has water standing but we use it daily when we have adequate hookups.

Ours is the fisher Paykel. Standing water doesn't seem right.

YouTube how to take it apart. I'd bet a dollar the impeller is broken on the bottom of the motor. Ours did the same thing. Fisher & Paykel were super easy to deal with and sent me a new motor under warranty in 3 days. Ours drains perfectly now.
It takes minutes to replace.

Thanks very much, a broken impeller makes perfect sense. I will check.

We have the Fisher Paykal and after we empty it, we leave the door ajar. I don't think there is anything wrong with ours, just needs to dry out.

We do the same but with the broken impeller there would be standing water an inch above the drain screen. So much so that I would have to vacuum it out with a wet dry vac.
I think the idiot dealers run it dry trying to show it off and that is what breaks the impellers.

I have a Fisher Paykel and have noticed standing water in the filter compartment. No water in the actual tub. I always assumed this was normal. Maybe not. Am I wrong???

"Cranemec"...thanks....if we have a standing water issue, I'll know exactly what to look for. We bought our coach off the lot and may not have gotten a dishwasher if we had ordered the coach, but we would now after having one. It's not the just the idea of not having to wash dishes, it's just handy to store dirty dishes for 2-3 days (out of sight) and then wash. Whisper quiet too!
