Domestic ACs freeze up?

With temps dropping to around 30* tonight, I switched on the furnace. I did notice that my dometics on the roof seem to run a bit differently when it gets near 36/37. We like to keep the fan running in the bedroom at night to circulate air so we keep it on low, not auto. But when it’s cold, it’ll shut off and restart about 5 min later. Is that why it’s best not to run them below freezing?

Are you running them on the heat cycle? Are you running the ac on low or just the fan?

I had the t-stat on heat pump w the fan on low at night and auto during the day. It’s getting to 30* tonight so I switched over to the furnace but still kept the fan on low.

My Dometic thermostat has separate settings for each ac, and the settings are:
AC, Auto, HP, Furnace, Fan, Off. There is a separate control Patton for the fan speed, low, med, high and auto.

I think you may do better with a small fan to circulate the air. You are probably losing heat circulating the warm air through the cold ac box. Allso heat pumps don't work well below 40*. The unit may be shutting off because it is to cold.

If you run your heat pumps when it is below 40 degrees outside, they will alternate between heating and defrosting cycles since they will freeze up. Below 40 degrees, the heat pumps are very ineffective.

You should have a separate setting for fan only without the heat pump running.
