Dragged filter cover up the Leelanau peninsula

As we drove the rv northward into the Leelanau peninsula on our way to the Wild Cherry RV Resort (a very nice place), we became aware of a strange noise coming from the rear of the coach.

Investigating, I discovered a plastic cover dragging on the ground. It was jammed up against the rear mud flap and apparently had been dragging for some time. I removed it and traveled on to the campground.

Further investigation showed that the cover protects several filters that Newmar conveniently located on the passenger side rear of the coach. Newmar has placed these filters in one location for ease of service. The cover in question protects the filters from the elements as well as stuff thrown up by the rear tires.

The cover is only held on at two points by spin-on knobs. Not the strongest or secure setup. In fact in my case the plastic on the cover around the knob had fatigued and failed.

I called Newmar and was assured that they would send out a new cover the same day. During the conversation the Newmar service rep said these covers fail "all the time" and that I "might want to secure the new cover with additional screws".

So fellow Newmar owners, if you have this same cover over your filters at the rear of your coach, you may want to take preventative action by adding additional fasteners around the perimeter of the plastic cover.

I chose 1/4 inch bolts with large washers and nylon lock nuts.

My cover came completely off somewhere on I-10! What's alarming is that my Honda Pilot and/or some air and fuel lines could have gone with the cover. WHAT THEN?? I also notified Newmar in writing about the serious nature of the problem and am really surprised that they continue to use the same poorly designed knobs screws. I secured my new cover with sst cap screws and locking nuts.

Larry,
Newmar warrantied the cover and sent it to my brother-in laws place in MI while we were visiting. I secured the cover far better than the factory setup- if it comes off now it will take the filters with it.

By the way, we will be testing out the Ohio roads Wednesday when we leave MI for PA.

Just got off the phone with customer service. Explained what I thought had happened. Took my name phone # address and said that I should be recieving it in a couple days. Would call me if there was a problem.You just can't expect any better than that.

How 'bout Michigan? Here we have 2 seasons, winter and construction.

The "fix" for this is a small channel fastened to the filter panel so that the bottom edge of the plastic cover fits into this channel thus giving it (the plastic cover) full bottom support. The same screw knobs now only have to hold the plastic cover up against the back plate. Has never come loose after 35k miles.... It is important that the plastic cover is placed into this channel and not over it. This channel may or may not be on your rig. Mine has always had it.
