Drops of oil

Stopped at the moho yesterday to pickup my polishing equipment. Upon opening one of the basement compartment doors below the living room slide I removed a plastic storage container only to find some drops of oil on the lid that appear to be dripping from a gear box connected to the electric motor that opperates the slide out. Anyone ever had a situation like this? I felt around the (gear box?) but only felt an accumlation of oil on the bottom. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same condition on my 2005 MADP, I posted the condition on another forum with a few suggestions but no help. I'll be monitoring this thread to see if anybody comes up with a solution. I don't think my condition is critical at this point and I will continue to monitor it.

harleyman134,

I don't consider it a threat at this point either. I kind of thought that it might have happened due to the excesive heat we have had this summer. I have not noticed any unusual operation of the slide to this point. I'll just have to keep my eye on it.

I'll take a look at mine never notice oil but will check. You may want to check the gear casing if it has bolts holding it together make sure the bolts are snug. Don't over tighten just snug them up.

checked mine out 04 dsdp and from the looks of it if the oil is coming out of seal on the electric motor that would be a problem, may get into the motor, but out of shaft seals on each side not so much, it could also be the seal that joins the two halfs together the first place it would leak would be out of one bolts, maybe some gasket glue in the bolt hole after it is removed and put back on

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I'll go to the moho tomorrow and take a better look. The oil actually was below the gear box along what seemed to be a center seam. I'll clean it all off and really take a good look.

Well I checked my gear box and there are no bolts but Phillips screws around perimeter of housing.
The only oil or its more grease is coming out of center of gear box around the shaft that the motor turns for slide movement.
Its not dripping just collected there.
I would think we all have grease in box but I'm not in the most hottest area of country. There is a grove running down from shaft and oil or grease would run down that grove if it became liquid form.

Someone else on another forum suggested that the slide gear box contains grease and not oil, if that is true kinda throws my theory about oil coming from the gear box. Looking at the slide gear box, most "boxes" I'm familiar with contain oil, not grease, ie rear end differential and transmission box on motorcycles.

Well I went over to the moho today to check things out. No more oil had dripped and I inspected the gear housing and the motor quite a bit but didn't find anything suspect. I wiped the oil that was at the bottom of the gear housing but found no cracks. Everything seemed tight to me. I guess I'll just monitor the situation from here and if it continues I guess I'll just give Newmar a call to see what they might say. If anything else comes up I'll post it again.

This is an old thread but I'm wondering what the final outcome was of the oil/grease leaking from the gear box. I just went into a compartment and like Steve N Sal found a small amount of lubricant on top of a storage box. The gear box has a small amount of oily substance on the it also.

Grease over time will give up some of its lubricant. My grease gun when left for more than a month or two drips oil out of the plunger shaft. I imagine the grease in the gearbox is just giving up a little of it's (lubricant) oil and is migrating thru the seams of the gearbox. I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep watching it and wipe it up..

The slide gear case contains what looks like wheel bearing grease. There are 3 or gears in the housing. The gear housing is a 2 piece desing that has a paper type gasket between the pieces. You should check and see if the screws are loose.

I'll check the screws before I retract the slide. It's a rainy day today and I might melt.

Also check the bolts that mount the slide motor to the coach. Newmar had some issues with the bolts loosening and then when the slide is activated the motor will try to turn and eventually break the mount points on the slide motor.
