Dutch Star steering column shell defect

For the first several trips in my 2018 DS when I tilted the steering wheel back towards me, I got a terrible squeak when turning the wheel. When I looked into it I found that the bottom 1/2 of the shell at the top of the steering column, below the steering wheel had two mounting holes that tore. The torn area is so thin that it flexes like a Red Solo Cup. I called Spartan, they said they supply the part to Newmar, but Newmar installs it so call Newmar. Called Newmar and of course they said no itís a Spartan part. Finally they worked it out for me to purchase the part from Spartan and Newmar would reimburse me. 6 weeks later, the new part arrives and it is as tin as the first one! The top piece, and both bottom pieces are .070 thick except for the two bottom pieces mounting holes are .019.
I called Spartan and there answer was thatís just the way they should be! Call Newmar.
I suggest all of you with this design (Spartan) take a close look at the 4 screws that hold the shells to your steering column (2 in top and 2 in bottom)
I should add, if you look at your steering column, the large rubber accordion boot, applies torsional stress on these pieces.

Stuart, sorry I can't help myself. So the squeaky wheel gets the oil? Mine two squeaks occasionally. More so in cold weather.

Lol, no this rubs all of the time when the wheel is tilted back, like in a car.

Stuart, if it was mine, I would reinforce these areas with fiberglass and West Epoxy patches. But I have extensive fiberglass experience, and have done it on the plastic shroud at the bottom of the radiator. I donít know if you are comfortable working with fiberglass/epoxy?
Thatís just an idea I can think of.

Thank you for the idea, I was also thinking of cutting out a couple of ABS washers from the old one and using ABS glue to secure them. Does fiberglass bond well to ABS?

Yes, it bonds well to ABS. Clean the area well with mineral spirits, rough it up with sandpaper, and lay the patch. My hangar neighbor had a small business repairing airplane ABS interior panels that way.

I find this interesting that more defective parts have not been discovered. My original shell plus the replacement shell both must have come from a the same bad run (hopefully it was a small batch) I still encourage Spartan owners to look at the bottom shell below the steering column with a flashlight, flex the shell a little and observe the area the two mounting screws go through, look for cracks and tears.

We are a couple months apart Nov 15 for mine. In my research I have found that this part is provided in the white miscellaneous parts box that comes with each chassis and installed by Newmar. In calling the manufacturer directly, it appears that this part is made in a large production run for Spartan, so the parts that were installed in January were probably from the same run. It could turn out that only a few came out like mine, worth checking.
