Electric stairs question

We have a 1999 Dutchstar. Our stairs are Kwikee brand. Recently the stairs have begun to retract every time we shut the door even when the switch is off. Coach is not running, no key in ignition. We replaced the switch (next to the door) but this made no difference. Anyone had this and have advice about fixing it? We have only owned this coach for 6 years so I have no idea about any maintenance that may have occurred before 2012. thanks!!

Those steps have a controller box mounted just above the top step under the coach. It has several inputs. There is a a magnetic switch that tells the controller when the door is open or closed. There is power supplied through the step control switch, usually near the passenger seat. There is an override from the ignition that powers the steps even when the switch is off. It sounds like you have a broken step switch that is always on, a broken wire or a step controller gone bad. Here here is a link to a manual that may help. https://www.rvtechlibrary.com/exteri...svc_manual.pdf

Here are the Kwikee Step Control Testing Procedures. Looks like step 13 may help you troubleshoot your issue.

I have a side question to this. Mine has an amber light next to the motor for the step that does not work. When should this light be on? Is it switched with the porch lights generally?

The Lockout/override switch get 12v from battery through a 5 amp fuse. Make sure you have voltage at the switch, if not trace back to the fuse. Fuse could be an inline or in a fuse block.

Mine come on when each time the door is opened and is on a timer, stays on for short time then goes off. I have never timed it to see how long it stays on.

Generally that's true ... 5 minute timer. It "can" be wired for use with porch light. RV manufacturer choice.
