Electrical Question

As of late, I have noticed the voltage reading on L-1 consistently averages approximately 8 volts less than L-2; sometimes as much as 10-12 volts. This is the case for both Shore Power and Generator power options. Is this normal or something to be concerned about?

Thanks.

I would check or have checked the neutral connections on the output of the automatic transfer switch ( ATC ) and the main breaker panel in the coach.

A loose neutral will allow the 2 lines to vary up and down lime yours are. If it gets worse you can start doing damage to your components from high or low voltage.

I see you have something drawing 18 amps. If you were to turn what ever is on off, does the voltage balance out ?

Check your transfer switch for loose wiring, can find info in this link.
Recalls down the bottom.

If none of these suggestions work, it could be the Silverleaf its self. From new we had one leg consistently lower than the other which I mentioned during one of our factory warranty visits. Turned out to be the monitoring/reporting system, not a significant imbalance in reality

X2 on check for loose neutral connections. Could be some very expensive repairs in your near future if the situation is not corrected.

One thing I notice is that leg1 is under load while leg2 is not. Try turning on the 2nd air conditioner and see if you can match the loads on both legs, then look at the reading.

Hi, Ronnie --

Good observation. I was also thinking along those lines, so over the past couple of days I have taken note of different load configurations. When L-2 has a heavier load than L-1, the voltage readings are more even with one another. When the loads are similar on each leg, I am still seeing a lower voltage reading on L-1 of approximately 6-8 volts. Here are some examples under varied load conditions.

Do you have a cord reel and has the transfer switch connections been checked?

Do you have an infrared thermometer? They are inexpensive; under $20 at Harbor Freight, and are very good at spotting problem areas. You could use it to check the breaker in a CB panel, or find loose wires on the terminals of the transfer panel, etc. When there is a voltage drop across a loose connection, it generated heat, and will stand out as a much warmer terminal that the others.

Also useful at other times; find cold air infiltration around window and door weatherstripping, or heat loss; tires that run low pressure will be hotter than the others (but remember that the sunny outside tire can show as a warmer).

Anyways, you get the idea.

Unloaded there is a 5 volt difference . It is more than likely your panel giving the error. The best way is to confirm the voltages with a meter. Your generator should be 120 volts , so unloaded both readings should be identical.
