From reading a number of posts in the archives I have figured out that even though my '07 DSDP has an EMS system ( the one in the compartment that shows amps, use, etc), the system does not include surge protection and I still need either an external or hard-wired surge protection system for the coach.

Am I right?

If you have the Newmar EMS, then that unit provides load management.

It does not provide surge, high/low voltage, or miswired campground pedestal protection.

THIS is the unit I and many others have. It's an excellent unit.

Are the hardwired ones difficult to install?

I have the hard wired model from Progressive Ind with remote also. I really like having the remote monitor inside coach. Although a friend who is more handy than myself helped me install mine he found it very simple. The instuctions were very good.

I just bought this unit from Tweety's for $322, and my dealer is charging me 1 hour ($80) to install it.

The hard wired versions sound nice, but I will say, I thought my Winnebago was "the last RV I'd ever buy"... Now I pick up my Newmar next weekend and I suddenly find myself quite happy with the mobile version. To each their own. In reality, either way I suppose the cost of a surge guard is essentially pocket change compared to the cost of the coach itself. But whether hard wired or mobile, I think a surge guard of some kind is a good idea.

After owning a Winnebago Vectra and pretty much "smoking" a microwave in a campground in Virginia due to a surge, I'll never own n RV and not have some kind of surge protection.... THANK YOU Winnebago for covering my losses.

Whether or not you choose to have it permanently mounted or portable, get something!!!!!!

Brad, using this surge protector ,SP, you will disconnect the two number 20 gage Romex wires from transfer switch, they feed your fused LOAD Center in coach.
Purchase a 4" box with flat cover, wire connectors for 50 amp cable wire and a 4' piece of 50 amp cable wire cable clamps for 50 amp and 20 amp cables into 4' box. If you can't find cable cut a piece off your shore line as I did.
Than reconnect shore line to TS where you removed it. You may need a longnose pliers to bend and get wire under screws.
Dependent where you place the 4" box and mount your SP cut 4' cable for what you will need to connect from box to SP than from SP back to where you removed the Romex cables in TS.
Make sure you have the cut wire leads under the screws in both TS and SP, no loose ends and wires are same color code connecting through SP & TS, we don't need any fire works.
Connecting this way will place the SP between the shore line and your Gen protecting all ckts feeding out of load center.

That doesn't sound too bad. The point about being able to keep the surge suppressor when you upgrade makes a lot of sense, too.

We were at the Tampa Super RV Show with the NKK
and when I saw the way the generator voltage was jumping all over the place i ran off inverter until I could get a SP at show. Portable Surge Protecter.
Glad I got it. Was at a CG and rig next to us had same SP and it got fried one night. Don't know what happen, but he claimed CG had bad electrical box.

Progressive Industries is supposed to be at the Newmar International Rally in June. I plan on getting one and having it installed. I think the protection is mandatory and don't know why Newmar does not include it on its coaches when made.
