My black valve is hard to open and close. I would like to repair/ replace it. It is remotely operated by what I believe to be a metal rod and is also enclosed under the fiver. Can anyone with experience or knowledge of this system help me out?
Is this a special valve that connects to the metal rod?
How difficult is the access and repair/replacement?
Any and all advice welcomed.

The age of your 5th may say you need a new gate valve, GATE VALVES, you will need to dump tank and remove the gate valve blade. If the slide chamber is ok than you will just have to replace the blade, rubber rings and four bolts.
If not you may have to do some pipe work also. The long rod will turn out of exsiting blade to rescrew into new replacement blade.
Your four old bolts maybe rusty so be careful removing them to save the blade holder sides.
Once you have apart replace the old rings slip in blade and replace four bolts. Only tighten bolts to where there are no leaks and not bind the blade so it can not move but moves freely.
The valve if enclosed must have a panel to remove to gain access maybe someone with a 5th can help you with that.

Russ, Have not looked under this one, but our ‘08 had an inspection port cut in the under belly. A round piece of the same type material about 6/7 inches in diameter held in placed by seal and screws.

After unscrewing and prying it loose, had remove a couple layers of insulation to expose the valve, cable connection etc.

Good luck

Russ this valve is what needs to be replaced. If you remove the four bolts the parts will split and insides will have the blade and chamber for it to slide in and two rubber rings for sealing thru sewer pipe system.
As we discussed in PM you just need to order correct size. 3 or 4"
RV Upgrades would have it to you in short order if you can't find in your local.

A big "thank you" to 007 & Mike for your replies. As you can tell this valve work is something new for me. When the weather breaks I intend on correcting this problem. Thanks to the information you provided I have a good understanding of what to do. 007--Great picture!
Happy camping!
