Engine coolant

I have a question on engine coolant. I have a 2006 Dutch Star with a 400HP Cummins, on a Spartan Chassis. I want to add some Coolant before a trip I am about to take, but I confused as to what I should put in. Any Ideas??

do not add {imho} normal green for cars...diesel needs the silicate kind...so go to local chassis dealer and ask them for the coolant

First check and see if your setup with a charged coolant filter....if so you can pretty much use any anti freeze......

If it still has OEM coolant, you could call Newmar & ask what you have. The standard in '06 would have been a HD diesel coolant. Do you have a coolant filter? If you have DCA levels that are checked annually then that is what you have.

Fleetguard ES Complete EG fully formulated is a great choice for this type of coolant. It's available in 50/50 or concentrate. It would be compatible with any ethylene glycol that you might have in there.

06 was during the transition period. To simplify this a bit:
1. If the coolant is green then only green can be added. You need to check SCA levels annually. The coolant needs to be replaced every 3 years.
2. If the coolant is red then red is what you should add. There is no need to check SCA and the coolant is replaced every 6 years. If you have a filter canister it is, most likely, empty.

Now this is not a perfect statement. but the transition period has been over for several years and going by color should work.

GARYKD, is right on in my opinion. If you do not know the history of the coolant (not the original owner) then you may want to have a Cummins shop check it out and advise you as to which coolant (s) you may have in this engine. It's very important to have the correct coolant.
