My 05 Essex Entry Step Cover stopped working. Pressinf switch on dash activates motor but mechanisim does not raise step to cover floor for passenger.

How do I gain access to the mechanisim to determin what's wrong so I can either repair or replace faulty part? I'm nowhere near a dealer and they'd probably keep me there forever waiting for parts.
