I use an Excel spreadsheet to track my fuel mileage. The spreadsheet deducts .75 gph for generator usage.
.75 mpg will probably overstate mpg in the cooler months

I pull a 5,000 lb TT 98% of my driving. My mileage is actual pencil at the pump. I had an engine failure so my engine miles are only 2,000 right now. I have noticed a drop in mileage by .5 MPG average with the new engine.

2005 DSDP 4320, Cat C-9 400 HP, Towing ~3000 @ 55 - 65 MPH, 10,100 total miles, Silverleaf VMS-240 says 7.4 MPG on this tank of diesel.
I've noticed the MPG varies considerably as a function of terrain, wind, altitude, speed, phase of the moon, time of day, height of the tide, depth of the water and state of nerves. Just joking!
My MPG does seem to be improving with age. The older I get, the slower I drive, and therefore the better MPG I get. With this formula by the time I reach 70 I'll be averaging 10 MPH and getting 10 MPG. 8-)

My guess is that my Essex is averaging 6.5 with a tow vehicle behind. Today I have several hundred miles averaging 6.3 with some hilly terrain; then after filling up and driving several more hundred miles through Indiana on the way to Spartan Motors, I had 7.3
Not having Silverleaf or any other accurate readout, I usually get the Cummins dealer to print out a flowsheet of all the parameters for the life of the engine. Subjectively, it seems my mileage is worsening, but it probably a function of impatience, speed and wind.

Over 74000 miles we average 8.33 MPG and generally tow something. This is a pen and paper calculation. The Trip Tek registers 7.42 so as you see the read out is low.

cwg: what does the dash display read for your MPG? MPG is one of the standard dash display options.

Hi Jeff,
The dash display is what I was referring to. I constantly reset the fuel MPG upon refueling. The only life history of MPG that I am aware of is the reading from the computer readout at Cummins.

6.1 MPG average over 28000 miles with headwinds, tailwinds, between 60-75 MPH. From Triptek.

Our 2005 EXDP pulling a CRV has a to-date average of 6.9 MPG usually traveling about 60 - 62 mph. We have some "several tank readings" of 7.1 - 7.3 in flat lands and low to mid 6's when we are in the mountains.
I would not trust a single or 2 tank pencil and paper average due to the error in filling. I also don't trust the computer readouts since they use averages in their caluclations. I only trust the "over time" averages from actual gallons and the number of miles traveled. I don't deduct for generator use or hydro-hot as it is all part of what I call my mileage.
