Exhaust Brake

What year did Newmar start adding a dash indicator to show when the exhaust brake is activated? I think I have one.

I don’t think mine is functioning properly.

Brake lights don’t activate.

Transmission selects 2 but I feel it’s just that no help from the exhaust brake

Solenoids? Fuses?

We had an '02 DSDP 4090. When on and activated the transmission "preselects" 2nd gear but engine speed would be too high if it actually went into 2nd. It will aggressively downshift when possible as you slow. They really don't do much above 65 mph.

And the brake itself, doesn't do much. Here's a simple experiment: Manuall downshift, then cycle the exhaust brake. You might feel a small tug as it closes. You can also build a telltale with a piece of thread and some fence wire. Twist the fence wire onto the EB the attach one end of the thread to the wire and the other end to something immovable. I ran mine into the bedroom under the engine hatch. When activated, the EB will pull and break the thread. The wire is there to reduce the heat getting to the thread.

The best way to see if it is working is to have your wife or a buddy open the "hood" in the BR and, using walkie talkies, have them watch the Exhaust brake (EB) while you are moving. The EB should start working above 10mph even if you have the switch on (something to do with transmission lock up or out).
So have someone watch as you take it up to 45 or so and then turn the EB switch on (tell them via walkie talkie what you're doing at each step) while your foot is still on the pedal - there should be no change. Take your foot off the pedal and then the EB should activate (along with transmission pointing to a lower gear (mine is 2nd)).
I had my EB "repaired" and I wasn't sure that it was actually working - the tranny was doing it's thing but wasn't sure that the EB was doing anything, because I can't be in two places at one time. It took me a year to figure out I needed someone else back there and got a buddy to ride back there with flashlight - we found the EB was not activating when it should have been and was activating when it shouldn't have been.
That tells me that the shop didn't have someone back there during their test drive and I'm working with them now.
Hope this helps.

I've been trying to remember. I used the VMSpc on a small netbook so depended on it's readout.

If it's working you will know. I rarely use my brakes. I have the ScanGage D and one of the parameters I have programmed is the exhaust brake percentage. Depending on my speed it will show anywhere from 60% to 100%.

Our 06 MADP had an indicator. Just watch your tack that will show you the engine brake is working

The tach will show the transmission downshift, but I don’t see how it will show the EB valve closing.

Our Spartan dash actually shows AUXILARY BRAKE on the display. Definitely working since going down large hill I have switched between LOW, MED and instantly notice a difference. Kind of thinking that if on HIGH probably have to give some gas to get the coach to move
Of course I only have 2900 miles driving diesel.

I use my engine brake all the time when going down inclines, and the little dash light comes on when it activates. You also feel it downshift. If yours downshifts on its own when going down a hill, it is working.

However, as a previous post said, you need your speed to be under 65 (or so) for it to activate. Over that speed it doesn't do much if anything.

My 2003 MADP lights the AUX BRAKE light on the dash and the rear brake lights when the exhaust brake closes. It does not light when the transmission downshifts, only when the exhaust brake closes.

Usmc, not sure when Newmar added the light but my coach is a 2002 and it has one. I believe the exhaust brake actuates with air and controlled by dc powered valve.
